When someone we love is grieving, we often worry about saying the wrong thing. But grieving people do not need perfect words — they need presence.

In this Open to Hope article, Dr. Heidi Horsley shares compassionate, practical guidance on what to say, what to avoid, and how to keep showing up for a grieving friend. Sometimes the most powerful words are simple: “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”

Grief doesn’t end. It changes.

A birthday. A memory. A family moment. And suddenly, grief is there again.

Losing someone you love is not only about grieving the person who died. It is also about grieving the secondary losses, changed family relationships, lost traditions, and the moments your children may never get to have.

Secondary loss is real, and it hurts.

If grief has caught you off guard lately, you are not alone.

When life feels shaken—by grief, illness, job loss, or fear about the future—Bernie Siegel, MD offers a grounding question:
What do I feel the need to do to bring myself happiness?
Then… do it.
Dr. Siegel believes that choosing small, life-giving actions—especially in the hardest seasons—can support healing and even help us live longer and healthier than we expect.

Losing a child changes everything.
In this powerful story, a father shares what happened after his 28-year-old son, Rob, died by suicide—and how he survived the shock, the hole in his heart, and the long road through grief. He writes about the unexpected healing he found through writing, a grief support group, and the lessons that carried him forward: be gentle with yourself, talk (and write), surrender to sadness, and let hope guide you.
If you’re a grieving parent—or you love someone who is—this piece offers real compassion and a reminder that you don’t have to do this alone.

New Year’s can hurt when you’re grieving.
When the world celebrates “fresh starts,” it can feel like a slap in the face—especially when you’re carrying the same love and longing into a year your person won’t be in.
If you’re dreading resolutions, you’re not alone. Instead of big goals, consider mini-goals—small, doable steps that gently support you through grief:
✨ Name one feeling (one word) each day
✨ Notice one good thing that happened
✨ Do one act of self-care (tiny counts)
✨ Smile once—even if it starts out as practice
Hope doesn’t have to start on January 1. It can begin on any ordinary day, in the smallest ways.
If New Year’s grief is hitting hard, save this post and come back to it when you need a steadier next step. 💛
