This 9.5mo. old liver-colored German Shepherd mix pup is in need of a home. However, she does need an experienced owner, and one that will get her into training right away. She has good qualities but unfortunately, there were things in her puppyhood that should have been done early on that we feel would have helped her become a better older puppy. She's just missing some manners that she should have learned already. Her current owner is no longer able to keep her and has basically run out of options. We want to keep her out of the shelter. If anyone is able to foster a pup that will need some work, a trainer that will take her on, or an experienced owner that can work with her activeness/over-reactiveness, please reach out.
The Good (according to owner):
She sleeps in her crate at night and goes to her crate on command. When feeding her or giving her treats she understands wait and okay. When her owner is home from work she behaves extremely well and mostly follows him around. She has gone through some training and does well with the trainer and at the groomers. She also seems to do well with a neighbor's dog. (We assume that she is fine with other dogs based on this.) There is a cat in the home and she actually runs from the when it begins to growl or hiss at her. She has never acted aggressively towards the cat. She would be a good dog for someone with land who likes to run as exercise and take her along. She would do well on hikes, also.
The Not-So-Good-But-Fixable:
She does bark (maybe lunge at times) a lot at people when they approach the owner (yes, typical Shepherd behavior). It's believed that she may be protective. She also does try to grab your hands sometimes (needs to be corrected...another reason a trainer is recommended). She does have some slight herding tendencies (she likes to "guide" you away from the door so you won't leave). She seems to be a bit much for the grandmother and daughter in the current home. We are recommending an adult home only due to her strength and "immaturity." From what we observed recently, she seemed more like a child that has to be told constantly to settle down and then would act out.
The Conclusion:
She may do best in a home with just 1 or 2 adult or older teenage people. She has lots of energy so she needs a home that will exercise her a lot, give her mental stimulation, and definitely immediate training. A fenced yard is a huge plus, if not a requirement.
*We realize that there are many dogs out there needing homes that may be easier to have, but this beautiful goofy girl is young and with the right owner, training, and persistence, she can be such a wonderful girl to someone! We do not want her to end up in a shelter or put down when she can just have the right person to give her a chance and right environment.
Her name is Asuna.
If interested in fostering, adopting, or training her, please send us an PM or email.
Thank you!
