On this day, October 26, in 1940, Orlando's second radio station, WLOF, first signed on the air. (WDBO was the first.) Broadcasting 250 watts on 1200 kilocycles, WLOF (now WORL) was originally an NBC Blue Network affiliate with studios and offices on the mezzanine floor of the Angebilt Hotel on Orange Avenue. George Hazelwood was president and general manager. The station began with a schedule of dramas, comedies, news, sports, soap operas, game shows, and big band broadcasts and, during the 1960s and 1970s, was a leader in Top 40 radio. It continued to use the WLOF call letters until 1984. WLOF is now used by a station in Buffalo, New York.
