Markham Woods Church Of Seventh Day Adventist Dirty Diggers toured historic Nehrling Gardens on May 8, 2026 with Theresa Schretzmann-Myers to learn the horticultural history of Palm Cottage Gardens and native and tropical plants introduced there that support wildlife and humans. The group was lucky to see Mama and Papa Sandhill Crane and their two Colts at Lake Nally wetlands. They also received information from Orange County Mosquito Control about using Mosquito Bits a highly effective, organic larvicide containing (Bti) (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis). They are designed to quickly kill mosquito larvae in standing water and fungus gnat larvae in houseplants. The (Bti) is harmless to humans, pets, fish, and beneficial insects like bees. The group.also enjoyed lunch at Yellow Dog Eats in the Gotha Rural Settlement Association, Inc..

Caladium bulbs and plants are available to purchase now for pickup at the event. Caladiums are a special part of Dr. Henry Nehrling’s legacy and the heart of this year’s spring event. We’ll also have tropical plants, orchids, gingers, herbs, and more available that day.

On April 25, 2026 Nehrling Gardens Board from the Gotha Rural Settlement Association, Inc., visited Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens to see Dr. Henry Nehrling's second garden in Naples, Florida, established in 1921. Nehrling's "Tropical Gardens and Arboretum" or "Garden of Solitude" was a 13.5-acre site, Nehrling created to house delicate plants after a freeze at his Gotha location. It later became known as the Caribbean Gardens and is currently part of the Naples Zoo. Situated in Naples, Florida, it was a testing ground for over 3,000 tropical and sub-tropical species. Nehrling focused on cultivating tropical and native trees, palms, bromeliads, caladiums, and other tropical plants. Legacy: The site, referred to by Nehrling as his "Garden of Solitude" due to its quiet nature, was eventually purchased by Julius Fleischmann in 1952 and reopened in 1954 as a tourist attraction. The property was designated a Collier County historic site in 2007 in recognition of its horticultural and cultural history. Special thanks to our Zoo Tour Guide Mulvena and Richard Nehrling who coordinated the visit!

This year’s spring event will include children’s crafts, storytime, face painting, birds of prey, live music, local vendors, food, popsicles, and plenty to explore throughout the gardens.
