Thank you Tara and Mark for digging thistle rosettes this evening! One of our goals this year was to keep the invasive nonnative thistles from going to seed. A small, but mighty group of awesome volunteers dug, clipped, piled, and bagged thistles over the growing season. Too bad it’s not a one and done, but with consistent work there will be fewer to contend with each year and more room for native habitat to support the caterpillars, spiders, beetles, moths, butterflies, wasps, and all the the other “little things that run the world.”

Look at all the 💜💜💜 at our little pocket prairie at 114th and Davenport! Aromatic aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium) is a beautiful late season resource for pollinators - 2-3 feet tall, full sun, medium dry to dry, not picky about type of soil.

Thank you Grant Olsen and Lindsey for all your work to help kick amur honeysuckle, buckthorn, and white mulberry to the curb today at Cottonwood Creek Preserve! These are three invasive species that grow fast and spread readily shading out native woodland plants. Great progress!

First time at the Glenn Po***ck Prairie in Bennington, Nebraska. So many cool things to see and hear - an eastern meadowlark, cedar beetles, apical rosin w**d galls, monarchs, cloudless sulphurs, moths, bumblebees, and more. We need to keep and care for the little bits of virgin prairie that are left. Prairie reconstructions are also needed to give back habitat to our rapidly declining grassland birds, pollinators, and all other wildlife that depend on this unique ecosystem.

Female yellow garden spiders are incredibly beautiful! Cool fact - a male signals to a potential mate by plucking at her web (is this the equivalent of texting?!) Cottonwood Creek Preserve

Love seeing all the yellows and blues in late summer and we especially love seeing all the different pollinators using them.

Moths! Look at the pollination that happens after sundown! Did you know there are more than 12,000 species of moths in North America - nearly 15x more than species of butterflies. Moth ❤️ - even the little brown ones.
