Plant it and they will come. Our newest Plant One garden has been in the ground for just one week and leaf cutter bees have already used this little iron weed.๐Ÿ˜

Our hearts are full.โค๏ธ Thank you so much to everyone for helping plant the newest pollinator garden space at Pacific Preserve this morning! It gives me a lot of hope seeing everyone working together to provide resources and create habitat for our native insects, birds, and other wildlife.
A huge thank you to Midwest Natives Nursery and Bumbling Bee Native Wildflowers for growing the gorgeous native flowers, grasses, and shrubs that everyone planted today.

Even the smallest of oak seedlings can provide valuable ecosystem benefits.๐Ÿ˜Š Leaf cutter bees use leaf pieces from this little red oak to line their nest cells. How cool is that๏ฟผ?!๏ฟผ

Whatโ€™s the buzz all about? Listen to this bumblebee buzz pollinating a prairie rose! She sonicates the flower with her flight muscles to loosen the pollen for gathering and provisioning the nest. Tomatoes and potatoes are two food crops that benefit from buzz pollination. ๐Ÿ… ๐Ÿฅ”

Blooming now! American plum (Prunus americana) - a highly beneficial and beautiful small tree (or large bush). More than 200 species of butterflies and moths count on the Prunus genus (e.g., American plum, chokecherry, black cherry) as host plants for their caterpillars! - high quality bird food! American plums naturally form thickets, however, suckers can be trimmed back in smaller landscapes. Bonus points for pretty white flowers that have a wonderful aroma and the tasty plums that ripen in late summer.

Snags. Dead and dying trees and large branches have enormous wildlife value. They serve as food sources, homes, and look outs for birds and other wildlife and also enrich the soil as they decay. Consider leaving them if no threat to your home or someone passing by. I used to see snags as ugly, but now see them as interesting and as a vital part of a healthy ecosystem.

In honor (or โ€œIn dishonorโ€ lol) of the end of National Invasive Species Awareness Week, Iโ€™d like to give a big shout out to Rooted Tree Specialists and the Bring on the Browse team from The Henry Doorly Zoo for removing and repurposing the callery pear that was in our yard. Good riddance to this highly invasive tree! And how cool is it that the pear along with the branches from several other trees trimmed by the Rooted Tree team trimmed were used as browse and enrichment for the elephants?! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š Thank you so much!
