Did you know that Connecticut's leaders approved separation from Great Britain BEFORE the Declaration of Independence was signed?

On June 14, 1776, the Connecticut General Assembly met in Hartford for a special session. The Second Continental Congress had convened in Philadelphia and more than a year had passed since war had started at Lexington and Concord. Reconciliation no longer seemed tenable. The talk was of independence.

Connecticut had selected Samuel Huntington, Roger Sherman, and Oliver Wolcott to serve as its delegates to the Continental Congress. The document pictured here records the momentous instructions the General Assembly gave them: “to propose to that respectable body to declare the United American Colonies free and independent States…”

Our new "Connecticut's Revolution" exhibit kicks off with this remarkable document, held in the collection of the Connecticut State Archives. Come see it yourself! Hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and select Saturdays (the next Family Saturday is September 19). Admission is ways free!
