State Rep. Kim Schofield closed out our Atlanta camp with a civics lesson. She walked our scholars through what a legislator actually does: writing bills and deciding where the state's money goes.

Then she told them she'd spent the last two weeks talking about Black Girls Code, and said it right there in the room: "We need more funding for Black Girls Code."

Our girls built all summer, 14 camps across 10 cities. The ones in Atlanta got to hear a lawmaker make the case for them in person.

She's ready. We're ready. And She's Built for This.

Applications are officially open for our brand new seven-week leadership cohort, built for Black girls in grades 6 through 8 across the Bay Area.

Twenty-four girls. Seven Saturdays. One room where her voice is the point.

Over seven weeks she will practice speaking up, lead real team challenges alongside her cohort, and finish the program claiming her own leadership identity out loud. Free and in person, starting September 26th.

Small groups are the whole design.
Every scholar at Brooklyn camp had an instructor within arm’s reach. Someone who could see her screen, catch where she got stuck and hand the problem back so she could finish it herself.
Our instructors are engineers, developers and mentors. Most of them are women our scholars can look at and see themselves in. 🧡

The projects are the reason they sign up. The people are the reason they stay.

Put a room full of Black and Brown girls together around laptops and something happens beyond the curriculum. They start looking over at each other's screens. They fix each other's bugs. They talk over each other about what to build next.

And they find out that the girl who is good at this looks like them. So does the one next to her. So does the one at the next table.

A lot of girls go their whole school career without that. Ours get it in a week.

Since 2011, more than 40,000 learners have come through Black Girls Code.

You built playlists. You built careers. Now build a computer. 🖥️✊🏾 BGC's Build Your World workshop series is a 3-session virtual experience where you'll design your own case, wire your own circuits, and walk away with a fully assembled cyberdeck.

Atlanta showcase day.

Every girl in that camp spent the season building an original video game from scratch. Designing sprites. Composing soundtracks. Writing GDScript in the Godot engine. Managing the whole thing from first idea to final build.

And on the last day, they present. One at a time, laptop open, walking the room through the choices they made and the bugs they fixed and the reason the boss level works the way it does.

The girl at the keyboard in these photos is doing exactly that. Everyone leaning toward that screen spent the summer building alongside her, which is why they know how much work is behind it.

Brooklyn, day one. 🧡

Our last Summer Camp session of the year opened this week, and these two got straight to it. No warm-up needed.

Every camp starts the same way: laptops open, an idea nobody has built yet, and a room full of girls who came ready. Brooklyn gets the final word on the summer, and they are spending it building.

Camp ends. The building doesn't. Code Along is free on YouTube all year, every season, whenever she's ready.

And then she walked across the stage and got her diploma. 🎓🧡

That's Showcase Day at Black Girls Code Summer Camp. Every girl in this video designed her own game, wrote the code behind it, and demoed it live to a room full of families who showed up to cheer.

Last day of Black Girls Code Summer Camp in South Los Angeles, and the room was loud.

Girls ages 10 to 17 stood up and presented the games they built to their parents and families. Diplomas came next. So did the hugs. Cheering for each other with what the Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper called joyous abandon, which is about right.

The food deserves its own paragraph. Chef Kerline Ordeus built a Haitian menu around what these girls already love, so a familiar wrap arrived with Haitian chicken inside. Ask the campers what they will remember and the food is going to come up.

We had the pleasure of hosting Black Girls Code for 2 weeks in our Sole Play Gaming Lounge. This was our first time designing our space to accommodate 60 students in two separate classrooms, and we made it work! We added a large Microsoft Surface Hub to each class, which added to their interactive learning experience.
