Statement from ADH: The Sacred Temple of Zaculeu Is in Danger of Being Privatized

🏛️ Saq'ulew (Zaculeu), the ancestral ceremonial center of the Maya Mam people, is at the center of a land dispute that threatens to hand it over to private owners. The Maya Mam people demand that their territorial rights be respected. Under Convention 169, no decision about their territory can be made without free, prior, and informed consultation.

🏛️ Saq'ulew (Zaculeu), centro ceremonial ancestral del pueblo Maya Mam, está en medio de una disputa de tierras que amenaza con entregarlo a manos privadas. El pueblo Maya Mam exige el respeto a sus derechos territoriales. Según el Convenio 169, ninguna decisión sobre su territorio puede tomarse sin consulta libre, previa e informada.

With deep sorrow and immense gratitude for her life, we honor María Elisa Meza Paniagua, beloved member of the Colectivo HIJOS Guatemala.

María Elisa was just a few months old when her father, Gustavo Adolfo Meza Soberanis, was disappeared by the Guatemalan army in 1983. Her mother, Ana Elizabeth "Betty" Paniagua, was killed by state forces when María Elisa was 5. Her aunt was also disappeared, shortly after her father.

She turned all of that pain into a lifelong struggle for memory, truth, and justice. Through HIJOS Guatemala and the Caso Diario Militar, she devoted herself to searching for her loved ones and to demanding that the thousands forcibly disappeared during Guatemala's Internal Armed Conflict never be erased.

"A mis papás no los mataron, ellos viven en mí." My parents were not killed. They live in me.

Today, María Elisa lives in all of us who continue the struggle.

El pueblo Xinka dijo NO a la mina Escobal. Canadá debe respetar su decisión.

En una consulta ordenada por la corte, el pueblo Xinka negó su consentimiento a la mina Escobal, operada por la canadiense Pan American Silver. Pero Canadá insiste en el "diálogo" en lugar de respetar su decisión.

Pan American Silver tampoco ha reconocido los resultados de la consulta, ignorando al pueblo Xinka y una petición con más de 6.000 firmas entregada en su oficina de Vancouver.

30 organizaciones canadienses exigen: respetar el NO del pueblo Xinka y cerrar definitivamente la mina.

The Xinka People said NO to the Escobal mine. Canada must respect their decision.

In a court-ordered consultation, the Xinka People withheld consent for the Escobal mine, operated by Canadian company Pan American Silver. Yet Canada keeps calling for "dialogue" instead of respecting their decision.

Pan American Silver still hasn't acknowledged the consultation results, ignoring the Xinka People and a petition with 6,000+ signatures delivered to its Vancouver office.

30 Canadian organizations are demanding: respect the Xinka People's NO and permanently close the mine.

Luz Leticia Case | A Verdict That Opens the Path to Truth ⚖️

On September 17, the court sentenced Juan Francisco Cifuentes Cano to 50 years in prison without parole—25 years each for Luz Leticia Hernández Agustín and Ana María López Rodríguez, disappeared in November 1982.

September 22 brought the dignified reparation hearing—another step toward truth.

After 44 years of struggle, impunity does not have the final word. Justice in one case opens a door for all cases. ✊🏽💜
