📣 Statement from ADH: Santiago Chimaltenango's Mam Communities Renew Vow to Defend Sacred Territory Against Extractive Threats

Twenty years ago, the Mam people of Santiago Chimaltenango organized and said "no" to mining. That good-faith community conference suspended the licenses threatening the water sources of Tuwi Pich'q'ab, the mountain that sustains life across the municipality.

Today, that fight is urgent again. Mining companies are pushing to reactivate licenses, ban future community conferences, and privatize Zaculeu te Chnab'jul, their sacred site. Communities won't allow it. They're reaffirming their right to decide over their land, their water, and their own way of organizing.

🕯️ "Justice has failed us here in Guatemala."

More than 44 years ago, on her 25th birthday, Luz Leticia Hernández Agustín was forcibly disappeared by the Guatemalan state. Her sisters Marta and Mirtala never stopped searching for her.

Today, three days a week, they sit through the trial of Juan Francisco Cifuentes Cano, former BROE commander, charged with her disappearance.

✊ "This isn't just about my sister's rights. It's about the rights of thousands of us who lack power." — Mirtala Hernández Agustín

📣 Statement from AJR: Rejecting House Arrest Granted to Former Military Official Manuel Benedicto Lucas García

AJR and CDH categorically reject the ruling granting house arrest to former general Manuel Benedicto Lucas García, on trial for Genocide, Crimes Against the Duties of Humanity, and Forced Disappearance against the Maya Ixil people (1978-1982).

The ruling endangers the right to justice for more than 1,700 victims and the safety of over 100 witnesses who brought the case to trial throughout 2024.
