It's Day 3 of Fire Prevention Week: Have you created a Fire Escape Plan for your household? NC OSFM has helpful resources that fire safety educators can utilize when creating a fire escape plan by visiting our website! Link in the comments below. πŸ”—

This prevention week, know where to go in an emergency with these 3 helpful pointers!

In your emergency plan, you should:
πŸ”₯Identify two exits from each room, if possible.
πŸ”₯Designate a safe meeting spot outside your home.
πŸ”₯Ensure everyone is aware of the plan, including children, seniors, and anyone who may need extra help.

When the smoke alarm goes off, everyone should know to evacuate immediately and not go back inside. Don't wait for an emergency to establish your escape plan. Plan today, practice tomorrow, and be prepared when it counts the most! πŸ”₯πŸšͺπŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦

The number one source of Home Fires? Your Kitchen. Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and injuries in North Carolina. Not faulty wiring. Not old smoke alarms. Your stove!

Here's the scary part: Most cooking fires happen in seconds. And most are preventable.

βœ… Never leave cooking unattended: Not even to check on something else. If you leave the kitchen, turn off the stove.
βœ… Keep flammable items away: Towels, curtains, paper, packaging. All belong far from the stove.
βœ… Turn pot handles inward: Keep them from being bumped or grabbed by children.
βœ… If a grease fire starts, DON'T use water: Use a fire extinguisher or cover the pan with a metal lid to smother it.

For renters and apartment residents: Discuss fire safety with your landlord. Know the locations of extinguishers and familiarize yourself with escape routes. Your kitchen is the heart of your home, so keep it safe! πŸ”₯

Share this with someone who loves to cook, or someone just learning. Remind them: Never leave a kitchen unattended!
