We are excited to share that construction has officially begun on Station 5, located at the corner of Love Mill Rd and NC Highway 218.

This project has been years in the making and is something our department and community have looked forward to for a long time. While there is still a lot of work ahead before the station is complete and ready to serve, seeing the first steps of construction underway is an exciting milestone.

Station 5 will help us continue to improve service, reduce response times, and better protect the residents and visitors of our district for years to come.

We are incredibly grateful for the support, patience, and encouragement from our community, county leaders, and everyone who has helped make this project possible. We look forward to sharing updates as construction progresses and watching this vision become a reality.

Thank you for supporting us as we continue building for the future.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

Thursday night our members trained on water supply operations as we prepare for our upcoming ISO inspection. Crews practiced setting up portable tanks and running a tanker shuttle to supply water to the engine.

An ISO (Insurance Services Office) inspection evaluates a fire department’s equipment, training, staffing, and water supply capabilities. The rating helps determine how well a department can protect its community and can also impact homeowners’ insurance rates.

Great work by everyone who came out and trained!

Tonight we were proud to gather for our Annual Banquet to celebrate the dedication, service, and commitment that make New Salem Fire Department what it is.

We would like to congratulate all of this year’s award recipients — your hard work and sacrifice do not go unnoticed. We are also honored to recognize the many members, past and present, who were celebrated for their years of service to our department and our community. Your continued commitment is the foundation of our strength.

A special moment of the evening was having the CPR survivor in attendance — a powerful reminder of why we train, why we serve, and why we answer the call.

Thank you to everyone who makes this department a family. 🚒

Today, members of the New Salem Fire Department had the opportunity to participate in a live-fire training exercise hosted by one of our neighboring departments. These types of training burns are invaluable, allowing firefighters to operate in real-world fire conditions while sharpening skills such as fire attack, search, ventilation, and coordination on the fireground.

We’re grateful to our neighboring department Wingate Volunteer Fire Department for the invitation and for working together to make this training possible. Opportunities like this strengthen inter-department cooperation and help ensure we’re always prepared to serve our community safely and effectively.

Thank you to everyone involved who helped make this a successful and productive training. 🚒🔥
