👀 A silver flash, then another... and another! A school of mullet was recently spotted from the footbridge at Paradise Creek Nature Park, cruising the waters of the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River.

These fascinating fish are an important part of the estuary food web. Mullet feed by grazing on algae, detritus, and organic matter along the bottom, helping recycle nutrients in the ecosystem. They move into estuaries like the Elizabeth River because these sheltered waters provide abundant food and important habitat for growing fish. Next time you're on the footbridge, keep an eye on the water. You never know what river life might swim by!

Food, games, classes, crafts, and a whole lot of fun!

Join us in the backlot area of the 757 Creative ReUse Center for a day of entertainment to welcome autumn :) Please RSVP by clicking the luma link, or the link can be found in our bio :)

9:00 AM: Event start time

​9:15 AM - 10:00 AM: Planting Fruit Bearing Trees and Shrubs workshop by Community Farmers

​10:15 AM -11:00 AM: Vermicomposting workshop by Coastal Castings

​11:30 AM - 12:15 PM: Container Gardening workshop by Norfolk Master Gardeners

​12:30 PM - 1:15 PM: DIY Turf Conversion workshop by the Elizabeth River Project

​2:00 PM: Event end time

​Feel free to use the time in between workshops to enjoy freshly baked goods made of produce from local gardens along with beverages, enjoy crafts, and play fall games.

​The baked goods consist of:

​-Tromboncino bread (locally sourced ingredients)

​-fig muffins (locally sourced ingredients)

​-vegan and gluten free banana chocolate chip muffins (vegan, gluten free, nut free, soy free)

​In the spirit of sustainability, it would be highly appreciated if you are able to please bring your own drink container. We will have backups available just in case. The available beverages are:

​-fresh coffee

​-gatorade

-​water

​The crafts include:

-​creating a Pinecone Birdseed Feeder

​-crafting an Autumn Hanger

​-assembling Earth Jewelry - bracelets and necklace made from things found in nature

​The ongoing games encompass:

​-Tik Tak Toe: played with veggies made on a board of sticks

​-Stack The Apples: whoever can stack the apples fastest without them falling down wins

​-Red Light Green Light

​-Simon Says

​A few things to note:

​-It is highly advised that all prepare for a light rain. Waterproof shoes, rain jackets, ponchos and umbrellas are your friend.

​-Due to the event location, only street parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

🏀🎣 More than 60 youth from the CUTS Youth Employment Program joined the Elizabeth River Project for the 3rd Annual Hooked & Hooped on the River, where basketball served as a bridge to a new outdoor adventure: fishing.

For many participants, it was their first time casting a line, but the day offered far more than fishing. Youth explored the Ryan Resilience Lab and its innovative green infrastructure systems, learning how living shorelines, rain gardens, and other nature-based solutions help communities adapt and thrive. The experience highlighted an important lesson: resilience isn't about avoiding challenges, but learning how to respond, adapt, and grow stronger through them.

A special thank-you goes to the outstanding volunteer mentors from Virginia Coastal Fly Anglers, who went above and beyond throughout the event, and Elizabeth River Project donors that make these events possible.

That unmistakable knock-knock-knock echoing through the woods at Paradise Creek Nature Park could be a pileated woodpecker hard at work. These incredible birds don't just search for insects beneath the bark. They create nesting cavities that later become homes for owls, bats, squirrels, and other wildlife, making them true ecosystem engineers.

💜🌿 On Indigenous Peoples Day, we're celebrating the deep knowledge and stewardship of the Indigenous peoples who have cared for native landscapes for generations.

One plant that tells that story is American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana), now glowing in shades of violet throughout Paradise Creek Nature Park. Indigenous peoples across the Southeast utilized the plant's berries, leaves, and roots, drawing on generations of knowledge about the natural world around them.

Today, beautyberry continues to serve the ecosystem, providing nectar for pollinators and colorful berries that feed birds and other wildlife through the cooler months.

As we honor Indigenous wisdom, consider making room for beautyberry in your own landscape. By planting native species, we reconnect with the ecological knowledge embedded in this place while creating habitat for the wildlife that depends on it.

Today, on Indigenous Peoples Day, we honor the original stewards of the lands and waters that sustain us. Long before the Elizabeth was known by its modern name, Indigenous communities cultivated deep relationships with the rivers, its wetlands, and its wildlife.

At the Elizabeth River Project, we recognize that caring for the river is strengthened when we listen to and learn from the people whose histories, cultures, and traditions are inseparable from these waterways. Indigenous Peoples Day is an opportunity not only to reflect on the past, but also to celebrate the living cultures, voices, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in our region and beyond.

We invite our community to join us for two upcoming programs that explore Indigenous connections to the Elizabeth River:

🎨 Indigenous Crafts on the Elizabeth River - 10/24 at Paradise Creek Nature Park
Discover traditional crafts, cultural practices, and the ways Indigenous peoples have long drawn inspiration from the natural world. This hands-on experience offers a meaningful opportunity to connect with history through creativity.

🌊 Indigenous Voices of the River - 11/6 at the Ryan Resilience Lab
Hear stories, perspectives, and knowledge that illuminate the enduring relationship between Indigenous peoples and local waterways. This special program fosters understanding, reflection, and connection to place.
