🌿🏡 At the Ryan Resilience Lab, even the windows are doing their part for the planet.

Native coral honeysuckle climbs the building’s facade, naturally shading the glass to keep things cool 🌞➡️❄️ while creating much‑needed habitat for wildlife. And it’s working — this clever mama cardinal chose the vines as the perfect, protected spot to build her nest. 🐦💛

In a world where birds often face dangerous window strikes, these GREENEST windows flip the script. They shelter, cool, and help wildlife thrive right outside the glass. 🌱✨

The Elizabeth River Project and the are teaming up once again to grow the river’s oyster population — and we’re looking for more local gardeners to join the effort. Whether you’re brand‑new or returning, this is one of the simplest, most hands‑on ways to help restore the Elizabeth River. 🌱💧

New gardeners can join a quick starter seminar, while returning participants can bring back their foster oysters for planting on restored reefs. By growing baby oysters right from your dock, you’ll help filter the river, strengthen habitat, and support species like red drum and blue crabs that depend on healthy reefs. 🐟🦀

Buckeye Chesapeake Terminal — alongside the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, the Elizabeth River Project, and regional partners — has completed its third major restoration at the Chesapeake fuel terminal. And the transformation is stunning.

What was once a barren, “moonscape” acre is now a thriving native meadow 🌾💚 — filtering stormwater, supporting wildlife, and proving that even the most industrialized riverfront can be reborn.

Guided by a regional design charrette, the team added fresh topsoil, planted thousands of salt‑tolerant native plugs and shrubs, hydroseeded with a resilient native mix, and now irrigates the meadow using water drawn directly from the site’s stormwater pond — a true full‑circle restoration 🌧️➡️🌿

This new meadow builds on two earlier Buckeye projects that earned the facility the 2026 Inside Business River Star Hall of Fame:
🌊 a 2025 wetland planted with 15,000+ grasses in one low‑tide cycle
🌼 a five‑acre parcel that naturally regenerated once mowing and herbicides stopped

We’re incredibly honored to be chosen as a 2026 Cox Charities Grant Recipient — especially because Cox employees selected the recipients. 💙🙌 That makes this recognition even more meaningful.

Cox is investing $10,000 to support our youth education programs at Paradise Creek Nature Park, helping us spark curiosity, build confidence, and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. 🌿✨

And it doesn’t stop there — as a proud River Star Business, Cox employees also volunteer their time to care for this treasured green space, strengthening the connection between community, nature, and the Elizabeth River. 🌊💚

🦦 Happy World Otter Day, River Lovers! Every branch of our urban river has reported otter sightings in recent years, a huge win for water quality and for everyone who helps protect our waterways by scooping the p**p and reducing fertilizer use. (🎥 thanks to Kelly Harvey)

Spot an otter in the wild? That’s usually a great sign! These playful creatures tend to show up where the water can support plenty of fish, crustaceans, and other small snacks they enjoy.

We want to know where they’re showing up. Help us track the river’s recovery by reporting your sightings through our Otter Spotter program in partnership with The River Otter Ecology Project.

Tackling some projects around the house before summer?

Whether you're painting or powerwashing, make sure you're keeping harmful chemicals out of the storm drains and waterways.

🪣🖌️Use indoor drains for cleaning paint brushes or emptying dirty wash buckets.
🚗🫧Wash your vehicle at a commercial car wash.
↔️🛢️Capture runoff from pressure washing or divert it into a landscaped area to keep detergents, oils, dirt, bleach and other chemicals from running off your property and into storm drains which go straight to our waterways.

Visit www.norfolk.gov/pollutionprevention for more tips on how to be a part of the pollution solution and remember, only rain down the storm drain!
