Your community is updating its regional Hazard Mitigation Plan — a federal document identifying floods, storms, extreme heat and other hazards threatening Hampton Roads and outlining actions to reduce risk.

TONIGHT: Learn what it means for your neighborhood, provide feedback and ask questions during the first of three public meetings for the 2027 Hazard Mitigation Plan on Wednesday, June 24, from 6-8 p.m. at the Norfolk Police Department 2nd Precinct Community Room (901 Asbury Ave.).

We have historically had 2 pairs on the Elizabeth - at the Berkeley and West Norfolk bridges.

Peregrine falcons in coastal Virginia are currently facing their greatest threat in more than half a century due to a dramatic outbreak of highly pathogenic bird flu.

Historically wiped out from the state's mountain regions by the pesticide DDT in the 1960s, the species was slowly re-established through a decades-long captive breeding and release program.

However, the falcon population on the Eastern Shore has plummeted by 50% since 2022.

Looks like we weren’t the only ones enjoying Harborfest, Sail250, and Juneteenth weekend — the cownose rays came out to celebrate too. Big thanks to Captain Michael J Mahlmann for catching and sharing this moment aboard the Tug Huntsman.

🌅 Welcome to the Longest Day of the Year

This morning at Paradise Creek Nature Park, we gathered to greet the sunrise. The solstice is a pause, a reminder that our environment is always speaking to us: in the birds reclaiming the morning, in the way the creek reflects every shift in the sky.

Here’s to sunlight that lingers, to community that shows up with intention, and to protecting the ecosystems that make mornings like this possible. Happy Summer Solstice! ☀️

The river remembers.
It remembers the hands that rowed in silence,
the footsteps hidden in the marsh,
the courage carried on the tide.

On Juneteenth, we honor the Elizabeth River
as a passage toward freedom—
a quiet part of the Underground Railroad
that held the dreams of those who refused to be bound.

As we heal the river,
we honor their journey.
As we restore its waters,
we carry their legacy forward.

The Elizabeth River Project kicked off its first volunteer kayak litter cleanup of the summer last Saturday, launching from the Ryan Resilience Lab and paddling out to protect the river. 🚣‍♀️💚

Removing litter isn’t just about keeping the river beautiful; it’s essential for healthy habitat, giving fish, birds, and other wildlife the cl
clean, safe environment they need to thrive.
