SUPPORT RELOCATING GHENT SCHOOL SO MAURY HIGH CAN RECEIVE FULL RENOVATION AND ATHLETIC FACILITIES! PLEASE SUPPORT MAURY!! URGENT! MAURY ATHLETICS NEEDS YOUR VOICE! School Board Votes tomorrow (Wednesday).
As you know, the School Board has been hard at work to close and consolidate 10 schools in Norfolk. They will vote THIS WEDNESDAY on the final plan. The plan that is the front-runner will NOT demolish Ghent School and leave Maury with even less space for athletics. Maury will be the ONLY high school in Norfolk without proper athletic fields and a stadium. Would you consider emailing the School Board and NPS leadership to voice your support for Maury? DID YOU KNOW?
Maury has operated for 114 years without proper athletic facilities for football, field hockey, boy’s and girl’s soccer, boy’s and girl’s track, and lacrosse.
Maury may get a new building but will NOT have the same athletic facilities as the other 4 high schools in Norfolk.
With the closing of Granby Elementary, Granby High School is in line to get a full athletic upgrade. Booker T, Norview, and Lake Taylor have just received significant upgrades to their athletic facilities. This will leave Maury as the only high school in the city without proper athletic facilities.
The Ghent School will not close; the program will remain intact. The location of the building is the only change.
Maury student athletes currently struggle with transportation, practice times, and sharing facilities off site.
Maury's lease at Powhatan field at ODU is scheduled to expire in 8 years, and currently, turf space is shared with multiple sports teams, clubs, and ODU athletics.
With the most recent school board decision, Maury will NOT have a full track, NO home soccer or field hockey field, and the baseball field will be small.
The Maury Track team regularly practices at Landstown High School, but this is costly, time consuming, and has unreliable availability.
We are in the final stretch, and time is running out. Please do not feel obligated but if this issue compels you, please make your voice heard TODAY because the vote is on Wednesday. Support relocating the Ghent School program so Maury can get a full renovation and facilities like all the other high schools in the area.
