Seniors Deserve Better. 💙
At Panhandle Women’s Project, we believe that our seniors deserve to age with dignity, community, and access to the resources that keep them active and connected.
That’s why we are deeply concerned about the proposed 100% increase in Senior Center membership fees in Niceville.
The Niceville Senior Center is so much more than a building. It is a place where seniors can make friends, stay active, learn new skills, participate in activities, and maintain a sense of community and independence. The City itself describes the center as a place focused on physical, mental, and social wellness, offering everything from fitness and art classes to games, social events, educational opportunities, and more. There are opportunities for billiards, pickleball, exercise, shuffleboard, co****le, table tennis, social gatherings, yoga, Zumba Gold, and countless other activities. Some programs are even offered for only a small requested donation, keeping participation accessible. (City of Niceville)
These aren’t simply recreational activities.
They are opportunities for connection.
For some seniors, the Senior Center may be one of the few places they regularly go where they can see friends, have conversations, stay physically active, and feel like they are part of a community. Social connection and physical activity are incredibly important as people age, and accessible community spaces can help combat isolation while encouraging healthier, more active lifestyles.
So when the cost of membership increases drastically, we have to ask:
Who are we pricing out?
Not everyone on a fixed income can simply absorb another large expense. For a senior living on Social Security or a limited retirement income, a 100% increase in membership price isn’t insignificant. It can mean choosing between a community resource and other necessities.
We understand that operating a facility costs money. We understand that budgets have to be considered. But affordability has to be part of that conversation too.
A senior center should not become a resource that only some seniors can afford to access.
We believe Niceville should look for solutions that allow the Senior Center to remain affordable, accessible, and sustainable rather than placing the burden of rising costs so heavily on the people the center exists to serve.
Our seniors have spent decades building our communities. They deserve a place where they can continue to live, connect, move, laugh, learn, and belong — without worrying that the price of membership will push them out.

We encourage our community to pay attention, speak up, attend local government meetings, and respectfully let our leaders know that senior programs matter and affordability matters.
Supporting our seniors isn’t just about honoring the past.
It’s about taking care of the people who are still an important part of our community today.
