Before troops could advance across the beaches of Normandy, specialized demolition teams moved into harm's way to clear obstacles designed to stop the invasion.
Pictured here, a Naval Combat Demolition Unit prepares a charge to destroy a "Belgian Gate" obstacle, helping create safe lanes for the thousands of Allied forces landing behind them. These courageous men faced enemy fire, rough seas, and immense danger to accomplish their mission.
On this 82nd anniversary of D-Day, we remember the heroes whose courage, sacrifice, and determination helped change the course of history.
We honor their legacy and remember their service.
