Newton Girls Basketball Association has been a recreational league since a group of parents started it in 1988, and we have never changed that. Here is what it means for your family:
One practice a week. One hour, on a weeknight, Monday through Thursday. You can tell us one night that does not work.
One game a week. Saturdays, mornings for the younger girls and early afternoon for the older ones.
Everyone plays. No tryouts and no cuts. Girls play with their friends, alongside classmates and neighbors, and can request a teammate when they register.
Real basketball. Certified referees, volunteer coaches, a scoreboard, and girls who want to win.
Confidence that lasts. Being part of a team teaches a girl to speak up, take the shot, and shake off a miss. She carries that into school and everywhere else.
Grade 2 is a Saturday clinic focused on learning the game. Grade 3 plays 4 on 4, so every girl touches the ball. Grades 4 through 9 play full 5 on 5.
We hear from parents who worry that a recreational league is not enough basketball. What we see every season is girls who get better because they are having fun, playing real minutes, and coming back the next year. Plenty of them play for us and somewhere else too. Saturdays are ours.
Fees, dates, and eligibility are in Saturday's email. The one date to remember is October 31. Register by then to avoid the $25 late fee and to have a friend request honored.
