2025 End-of-Year Online Auction

The auction is now LIVE! Support our 2026 initiative to build multi-sport backboards

The Friends of Newton Tennis (FoNT) is raising funds to install a two-sided, multi-purpose backboard at a park or school to be selected. This project will transform an underused court into a year-round training space for tennis, pickleball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and softball. Durable and low-maintenance, the backboard will expand access to quality recreation for Newton residents of all ages. With $30,000 already raised toward our $40,000 goal, your tax-deductible gift will help bring this valuable community asset to life.

This summer and fall, The Friends of Newton Tennis partnered with NXT Athletics for “Programs to Learn How to Learn,” using tennis and complementary activities to grow children’s minds and bodies—especially our beginner Newton juniors. NXT Athletics is a Newton-based 501(c)(3) founded by former USTA 14 and under coach Dickie Herbst and former Harvard men’s coach Daves Fish. Inspired by Dr. John Ratey’s Spark—“Exercise cues the building blocks of learning in the brain”—kids built confidence and connection in Just Play! Match Play, and families learned side-by-side in our Family Approach program. Thanks to the USTA Community Champions Grants, this community collaboration reached more Newton players than ever

Garden City Championships Concludes with Six Finals

The Newton, MA-based tennis championships are three weekends of singles and doubles competition in August and September.

In its fourth year, the largest municipal tennis tournament in New England offered six level-based divisions and attracted 253 registered novice to high performance players of all ages.

The championships are organized by The Friends of Newton Tennis (a USTA Community Tennis Association non-profit) and City of Newton Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture.

The tournament, held at the 10-court Newton North High School tennis complex, is a competition and a fundraiser for fixing Newton’s 62 hard tennis courts.

It is supported by a USTA New England Tennis and Education Foundation grant in honor of Isadore Singer (former MIT math professor, Newton resident and avid tennis player).

$1,500 High Performance Singles (August 16-18, 2024)

HIgh School Lights on Until 9 PM Through Nov. 30

The City of Newton is extending the season at the two high school facilities including leaving on the lights. At this time, the city Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture is leaving lights on until 9pm through the end of November. If there is a significant snowstorm or if there is virtually zero use in the later hours, the plan will be adjusted accordingly.

The city is seeking feedback on how much the courts are used in November, including how late in the evening. Please send emails to Nicole Banks, PRC Commissioner at [email protected]

Thank you to Sudbury River Tennis Club in Framingham, MA, for hosting Boston Metro Spec Tennis Club, an initiative of The Friends of Newton Tennis. This is our second visit this year to Sudbury River Tennis Club, where former Harvard men's varsity coach Dave Fish ran another one of his clinics and oversaw a spirited round robin. The events have gone so well that Club President Ali Corton wants to make Spec round robins part of next year's programming.

SPEC-tacular Tennis Clinic Exceeds Expectations

Forty-seven SPEC tennis players of all levels and ages took part in the second annual clinic and mixer at Wimbledon 109 Tennis Club in Walpole, Sunday, Feb. 26. Led by former Harvard tennis coach Dave Fish, the players learned and practiced forehand and backhand strokes, net approach shots and volleys, serving techniques and doubles strategy. This new sport follows basic tennis rules, uses modified beach tennis paddles, quiet soft orange-dot balls and a pickleball net. In addition, players tested a new analytic interactive tennis wall app known as RAQTS, developed by Alex Johansson, the director of the New England Tennis Academy at Longfellow Natick. The clinic was organized by the Boston Metro Spec Tennis Club, a project of The Friends of Newton Tennis, and Wimbledon 109 Tennis Club. DM us to learn more.

City Tennis Tournament and Fundraiser (Saturday October 1)
- Six Different Divisions for Players at All Levels

The city Department of Parks, Recreation & Culture and Friends of Newton Tennis have launched registration for the city's annual doubles tennis fundraiser, to be held Saturday, Oct. 1 at Newton North and South high schools. This year, the tournament has a new name, the 2022 Garden City Doubles Championships, which is intended to highlight the 100+ year history of tennis in Newton’s neighborhood parks. All funds raised through entry fees and sponsorships go towards repair and maintenance of Newton’s 67 tennis courts.

The tournament is open to Newton residents and non-residents of any age, level-based play (beginners to high-performance players), draws include men and women (co-ed = any combination), and players guaranteed multiple matches.
