Some tournaments carry a name that means something 🎾 In 2025, our Doubles Championships were held in tribute to Professor Isadore Singer — MIT mathematician and lifelong tennis enthusiast whose love for the game left a mark on our community. That same season, 276 players registered — our biggest year yet.
This season, we're continuing that tribute with a memorial plaque honoring his legacy on our courts.

By 2024, our small round robin had outgrown its own name 🎾 Co-chair Dave Fish — former Harvard men's tennis coach — had the idea: brand it the Garden City Tennis Series, after Newton's own nickname and its fame for lush green spaces.
The rebrand brought Singles Championships, Doubles for Advanced/High Performance AND Novice/Intermediate players, a new women's-only division, and Junior Challengers all summer — pushing season registration to 213 players, up from 174 the year before.

Year two, and the numbers backed up the energy 🎾 The 2nd Annual Doubles Round Robin Open expanded into a full weekend — pairing the tournament with a brand-new Kids Racquet Sports & Health Festival for toddlers through teens. Registered players jumped to 143 for the season.
What began with 21 players became a true family affair. That shift shaped everything that came next.

Every tradition starts somewhere. In May 2021, 20 Friends of Newton Tennis members gathered at Newton North for a casual Meet & Greet round robin — an idea brought to us by Martin Seemann, a visitor from Germany who modeled it after community clubs back home. A second Meet & Greet followed in June.
By fall, the concept had grown: our 1st Annual Doubles Round Robin Open drew 21 players to Newton South on Oct. 2. By season's end, 114 players had registered across all 2021 events.
