What happens when a country’s greatest export is no longer coffee, gold or labour, but its brightest minds? When doctors leave hospitals, scholars leave universities, entrepreneurs move their ideas, and political critics exchange home for exile, migration becomes more than movement; it becomes a verdict on the State.

Uganda must therefore confront an uncomfortable question: are our people abandoning the country, or is the country abandoning its people?

Today, we examine the economics of brain drain, the wounds of exile, the possibilities of diaspora engagement, and the reforms necessary to transform departure from escape into choice and Uganda into a country genuinely worth returning to.
