Today is National Food Bank Day! 💚

Every day, our work is powered by a community that believes no one should have to face hunger alone. On this day, we celebrate YOU and the amazing things we can accomplish when our community comes together.

🎒 Weekends shouldn’t mean worrying about food.

For 1 in 5 Delaware children, the meals they receive at school may be the most reliable meals of their day. That’s where our Backpack Program comes in, providing easy-to-prepare, nutritious food for weekends and holidays when school meals aren’t available.

And just $300 helps provide weekend and holiday food for one child for an entire year. 💚

On Wednesday, September 9, our friends at 93.7 WSTW are once again stepping up for local kids with the Backpack Buddies Radiothon!

đŸ“» Tune in from 6 a.m.–6 p.m. to hear stories about the impact of the program and learn how YOU can help make sure Delaware kids have the food they need to learn, grow and thrive.

Please note our upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend hours. Normal business hours will resume on Tuesday!

September is Hunger Action Month, a time to turn awareness into action for neighbors like Ashley* and Linda*.

Ashley came to our Milford Healthy Pantry Center with her three daughters. She’s working. Her husband is working. Yet rising bills, lot rent, gas, car repairs, school expenses and medical costs make it hard to keep food on the table.

Her two oldest daughters receive food through our Backpack Program.

“It helps. They really look forward to Fridays,” Ashley says.

A few chairs away, Linda* waited for a ride home. Disabled since a serious car accident, she lives alone in a mobile home with a leaking roof and no running water. Her case worker is helping her find safe, affordable housing.

And then there’s a little girl getting ready for her first day at a new school. When asked about her favorite subject, she paused.

“Lunch. I finally get to eat.”

These are the faces of hunger in Delaware.

More than 157,000 Delawareans—including approximately 44,000 children—experience food insecurity.

This Hunger Action Month, we’re asking Delawareans to take action. Donate. Volunteer. Advocate. Start a food drive. Share our message. Every action—big or small—helps put food on the table and hope within reach.

🧡 Hunger Action Month starts with each of us. What action will you take?

1 in 5 Delaware kids is facing food insecurity.

As students head back to school this week, many will walk into the classroom worried about more than new teachers, homework and making friends. They may also be wondering if there will be enough food at home.

Kids can’t learn and thrive when they’re hungry.

This school year, help us make sure every Delaware child has the food they need to grow, learn and dream. 💚

Have you visited our CafĂ© in Milford lately? ☕đŸ„Ș

If not, you’re in for a treat! Our new menu features eight specialty sandwiches—our Fan Favorites—created and named to recognize some of the favorites requested by our regular customers.

Today, meet the face behind The Phil Wrap, named in honor of Phil Williamson, a longtime—and hard-working—volunteer in our Healthy Pantry Center and Volunteer Room.

The Phil Wrap is a fresh, custom-made veggie wrap, and its story is a great example of how our menu continues to evolve. Phil and his wife became vegan about two years ago. Since Phil spends two days a week with us, he asked CafĂ© Manager JR Duffy and CafĂ© Assistant Bryan Anton if they could create a veggie wrap for him. Chef JR took it from there—including one important question: Did Phil want hummus? The answer was yes!

“Many people think vegetables are boring, but they don’t have to be,” Phil explains. “Each has a distinct flavor, and you can choose exactly which ones you want on your wrap. Add pickles or peppers for extra flavor. Hummus brings another layer of flavor and texture while providing a good source of protein.”

Phil orders The Phil Wrap at least once a week—and says he’s never been disappointed.

“J.R. and Bryan do a great job making it.”

Come visit us and try one of our Fan Favorites! Each sandwich is served with chips for just $10, and proceeds support students enrolled in our culinary training programs.

🎉 We’re proud to share that we have been named a 2026 Top Workplace!

Members of our team celebrated this special recognition Wednesday evening as Delaware Online/The News Journal marked its 20th year honoring local organizations through the Top Workplaces program.

What makes this recognition especially meaningful is that it is based on feedback from our employees. ❀

Every day, our team brings compassion, dedication and a shared commitment to our vision of creating a community free of hunger. We’re grateful for the talented people who make the Food Bank not only a great place to serve our community, but a great place to work.

Thank you to our entire team for making the Food Bank of Delaware a Top Workplace!

A broken ankle, a career setback, and an uncertain future could have stopped Octavia Dolson in her tracks. Instead, she chose a new path.

After completing our Culinary School program, Octavia graduated with more than a certificate. She was also named this year's recipient of the Pletcher Scholarship Award, recognizing her leadership, integrity, and commitment to serving others.

Today, she's beginning a new full-time job and looking ahead to a bright future.

Congratulations, Octavia! And thank you to Nina Pletcher for creating opportunities for Culinary School students through her generous scholarship support.
