It has been 45 years since the first official report of what became known as the AIDS epidemic on June 5, 1981. Today, about 25% of people living with HIV in the U.S. were diagnosed before 1996 — before effective treatment existed. Many face AIDS Survivor Syndrome (ASS), stigma, isolation, and other unique challenges as they age. HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day is a time to honor long-term survivors and raise awareness of their needs, experiences, and journeys.
