Can mushrooms help clean up polluted rainwater?

Angela spent her summer finding out. 🍄🧬
Meet Angela, an Apex youth studying Biochemistry at Hunter College. This summer, she was a Research & Teaching Intern at BioBus, matched through Apex for Youth’s J.T. Tai Internship Program, in partnership with Life Science Cares Boston! 🧬🔬

Over 8 weeks, Angela dived into different projects:
🔬Mentoring high schoolers on their research projects
🦠 Designing activities that get elementary schoolers excited about pH and chemistry.

Thank you to the J.T. Tai Internship Program for making experiences like this possible, connecting our young people with opportunities to explore a variety of careers, work in professional environments, and develop transferable skills for school and future careers.

32 Apex for Youth young adult graduates of Apex’s programs (alumni) explored Astoria for a food crawl in one of NYC’s most diverse neighborhoods.

Most of our youth know what it’s like to have their food seen as unfamiliar by someone who’s never tried it. So when it was their turn to try something new, they brought curiosity instead.

“Sometimes the best way to get comfortable with risk is just to take it and realize nothing terrible happens. Trying new foods together is a fun, easy way to practice that feeling- one small step toward the bigger, bolder choices ahead!” – Sarah Park, Apex for Youth Alumni Program Manager.

This is what community looks like at Apex for Youth: alumni coming back together, connecting through love of food, and celebrating cultures that don’t always get the recognition they deserve.

Behind every dish is the culture and the story.

Our youth, through their JT Tai Internship program, sat down with the team behind Fish Cheeks and 55 Hospitality to learn all about restaurant cultures, food careers, and hospitality.

Restaurant culture often gets a reputation for yelling chefs and high-stress kitchens.

But what our interns saw at Fish Cheeks was different: a team that treats hospitality like family, proving the industry can be just as inviting and rewarding as it is demanding.

Thank you to Dustin, Hoon, Morgan, , and 55 hospitality for welcoming our youth, sharing your career journeys, and for the delicious food!

The World Cup has everyone talking soccer right now, including our youth, who just took the field and learned the basics of soccer for the first time. ⚽

teamed up with AYSO Play for our first-ever soccer clinic. From first touches to first goals, our youth got to experience the game that is uniting fans across the globe this summer.

Soccer is about connection. The FIFA World Cup was born of a vision to bring people together across every divide, and that’s exactly what we saw on the field. Our youth cheered each other on.

Maybe we’ve got a future World Cup star. 🌍🏆

In 2021, a 13-year-old was targeted in an Asian-hate incident at a Queens basketball court. 🏀

We didn’t respond with fear. We responded with a tournament.

That’s Hoops Over Hate, Apex for Youth’s youth-led 3v3 tournament in Flushing and Brooklyn, built on diversity, connection, and unity through sport.

This year: 20 teams. 105 youth. And the Larry O’Brien trophy on site, reminding our youth they belong in this space. 🏆

That confidence doesn’t stay on the court. It follows them.

Five years in: Unity isn’t announced, it’s built. Strangers show up, teammates walk away. 🏀

Every day, our youth see what’s possible when our community leaders like Roy, Kim, Paul, and Maxwell speak their truth, embrace every part of who they are, and own their story. 🌟
