Exciting news from our Early Childhood division: this fall, our Family Child Care Network has been awarded 90 2-K slots with providers in Washington Heights and East New York!

We’re proud to be part of NYC’s 2-K expansion, made possible by the partnership between Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul. University Settlement partners with our Family Child Care providers to ensure they have access to current best-practice training and educational resources, as well as high quality logistical support; in turn our licensed and caring providers partner with families to help our communities’ youngest learners get a strong start. We’re looking forward to building on our many decades of experience with this work as NYC moves closer to the promise of universal childcare.

This September will mark 25 years since the attacks of 9/11. As we observe this milestone, we invite the University Settlement community to join us for a special event to reflect on the ways New Yorkers responded and rebuilt after the crisis.

We'll start with a screening of “9/11: RECLAIMING GROUND ZERO,” an hour-long documentary which revisits one of the most ambitious experiments in participatory democracy in modern American history, "Listening to the City," which University Settlement supported and participated in at the time.

After the screening, we'll convene a healing circle-style conversation where participants can respond to the film and reflect on their personal experiences and civic engagement, facilitated by Barbara DiGangi (Director, Community Wellness Initiatives) with support from Dave Hughes (Director, Communications).

Content Warning: The film contains intense and emotional footage of the events of 9/11. Participants who are sensitive to this footage may wish to step outside for the first 8 minutes of the screening.

Our third annual Community Baby Shower in East New York was a tremendous success! 🍼

The Community Baby Shower connects expecting parents and families with infants under 3 months old with resources that support healthy pregnancies, early childhood development, and long-term family well-being. This year's families enjoyed a day filled with belly painting, professional maternity photo sessions, food, raffles, and opportunities to connect with University Settlement and other community organizations dedicated to supporting children and families.

We are especially grateful to the Office of New York City Council Member Chris Banks, who represents District 42 in Brooklyn, including parts of East New York, Canarsie, and surrounding communities, for their continued support of our Early Head Start families. This was the third time Council Member Banks and his team participated in our Community Baby Shower, and we truly appreciate having a local leader who continues to show up and support initiatives that celebrate and strengthen our children and families.

Thank you to our donors, including Moody's, Expecting Relief, and 𝖯𝗅𝖺𝗒𝖱𝖾𝖺𝖽𝖵𝖨𝖯 – your contributions helped make the event even more memorable for our families. We also extend our sincere appreciation to our community partners, including PlayReadVIP, LINC, Healthy Start Brooklyn, Brooklyn Public Library, and NYC Health, for sharing valuable information and resources with our families. And finally, a heartfelt thank you to our small but mighty Early Head Start team, whose dedication and teamwork helped bring this event to life!

Our friend Rich Baum (President & CEO, Educational Alliance) recently published a wonderful reflection on the unique ways settlement houses can create better-connected communities.

It’s a terrific introduction to “settlement house thinking” and a great way to understand why organizations like ours remain a vital thread in NYC’s social fabric, 140 years after University Settlement became the first settlement house in the Americas.

Thank you, Ms. Tami! Your music classes have been a highlight for the children at our Early Childhood Center. 🎹

Our Early Childhood programs partner with local artists to provide outstanding enrichment opportunities to our youngest learners. Ms. Tami Yaegashi, an early childhood music educator who has been leading music classes at our Early Childhood Center throughout the year, shared her thoughts on the power of music in early learning.

“Early childhood music classes are more than just an ‘extra’ preschool activity – they are foundational and support the overall development of the whole child,” she told us. “Curiosity and the act of learning is a naturally joyful process for young children, and music class provides a special space for that to grow and be nurtured. I also think with classrooms like those at University Settlement, where many languages are spoken, music feels like a great ‘common language’ that we all speak!"

Our College Passport students had a great time exploring potential future pathways at our career panel! 💼

Last week, our College Passport program hosted a career panel at LaGuardia Community College where professionals from University Settlement and other organizations shared insights about their careers. The panel included professionals with a wide range of job experiences that our students indicated they might pursue – including nursing, social work, accounting and corporate leadership, marketing, and fundraising.

One of the panelists was Ken C. Joseph, Esq., Chief Compliance Officer of Braidwell LP and Vice President of University Settlement’s Board of Directors, who shared lessons from his own career journey and offered students valuable advice about leadership, professional growth, handling setbacks, and navigating career decisions. Students also heard from Elaine Aboni (Therapist & Licensed Social Worker, One Brooklyn Health), Jana Kozlowski (RN Specializing in Geriatrics for NORCs, Visiting Nurses Services), Talea Wilson (Private NYS Medicaid Insurance, Prompt Care Management), and Kaylah Carae, a former staff member at College Passport who now works as a Production Coordinator at Left Right TV. Joining them were Lisa Stein (Chief Financial Officer), Aretha Boomer (Senior Clinical Social Worker), Helen Claire Carlyle (Assistant Director of Institutional Giving), and Dave Hughes (Director of Communications and Marketing) from University Settlement.

Each panelist explained their career arc and shared guidance about entering adulthood, overcoming challenges, and being true to yourself. Students had the opportunity to ask questions before sitting down for lunch with the panelists and continuing the conversation.

We were proud to welcome this year's Fordham University GSS Summer London Program students to University Settlement! 🤝

Last month, a group of Fordham students working towards their Masters in Social Work (MSW) toured our headquarters to learn more about settlement houses in NYC, in advance of a summer trip to London where they’ll also visit the very first settlement house, Toynbee Hall.

Cate Graney, who leads both our Home Based Crisis Intervention program and our MSW internship cohorts, convened a panel discussion composed of University Settlement staff who got their start with us as interns. Panelists discussed what they do in their jobs now that they’ve received their degrees, reflected on their internships, and shared advice for students entering their second year placements.

During this visit, Fordham also awarded University Settlement with a plaque recognizing our contributions to their Settlement House Summer Program!

Our Adult Literacy Program is launching their first-ever 8-Week Bridge to Careers in Healthcare program! 🩺

This FREE new program prepares participants for entry-level healthcare careers by providing English instruction, job training, and career support. It includes four weeks of English for Healthcare classes, four weeks of Home Health Aide (HHA) training and certification, job search support, individualized career guidance, and transportation assistance and stipends for eligible participants. All applicants must be at least 18 years old, reside in New York City, and be authorized to work in the United States. Our next cohort begins in August.

Want to learn English for free? Our Adult Literacy Program is recruiting new participants for our upcoming 10-month English program! 🗣️

Registration has reopened for our English for Speakers of Other Languages classes, which run from September to June. Classes are held on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, with daytime, evening, and weekend options available. Please note that evening and weekend classes are only available to participants who are currently employed. Participants must be 18 years of age or older, must reside in New York City, and must be able to commit to attending classes continuously for the full 10-month program.

We’re excited to see NYC Comptroller Mark Levineand the Comptroller’s Office launch the new Late Contracts Dashboard!

Nonprofits contracted by NYC to provide essential services have been dealing with late payments from the City for a long time, and these delays make it harder to plan, pay staff, and keep programs running. The Comptroller’s new dashboard gives organizations like ours, policymakers, and the public a clearer picture of why payments are delayed, how long the wait has been, and which agencies or types of contracts are seeing the biggest backlogs. Being able to filter by agency, vendor, nonprofit status, fiscal year, and other factors makes it easier to spot patterns instead of guessing where the problems are.

We appreciate the Comptroller’s continued attention on this issue – a smoother and more reliable contracting process makes a real difference for nonprofits and for all the New Yorkers we collectively serve!
