Surviving Gun Violence: Robert’s Story

In this special episode of Unheard Conversations, Elements House-LES member Robert shares his experience surviving a drive-by shooting and reflects on survival, recovery, and the lessons he has carried with him since.

We also hear from Robert’s mother, Laura, who shares a family’s perspective on the fear and heartbreak caused by gun violence—and the importance of continuing to build safer communities.

A look back at last week’s Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training at Elements House-LES!

In this video, New York Disaster Interfaith Services (NYDIS)' Faith Sector Director Dr. Lucy Cummings shares her experience facilitating the training with our members and staff, along with highlights from the day.

The training gave our community an opportunity to learn together, strengthen our understanding of mental health, and build practical skills for supporting one another.

A special shoutout to our member Philip, who captured and edited this video! We love seeing our members use their creativity and skills to help tell the story of our community.

Today, Elements House-LES members and staff were invited by one of our members to visit community gardens in the Bronx, where they are also a garden member.

We spent the day learning about different plants and herbs, tasting fresh herbs and vegetables, and connecting with the community members who help care for and maintain these beautiful spaces.

It was a great opportunity for our members to learn more about gardening, green spaces, and the role they play in bringing communities together.

Today, New York Disaster Interfaith Services (NYDIS)’ Faith Sector Director Dr. Lucy Cummings and Program Associate Andrea Vega Troncoso, along with our member Philip, facilitated the Resilientville workshop at Elements House-LES.

Through an interactive disaster roleplay, our members and staff explored how communities can come together during emergencies, make informed decisions, and support one another in times of crisis. The workshop encouraged teamwork, communication, and resilience while highlighting the importance of community preparedness.

A big thank you to Dr. Lucy Cummings, Andrea Vega Troncoso, and Philip for leading this engaging and educational experience!
