Something to remember on this Ageism Awareness Day: when we get to know people of different ages, stereotypes give way to understanding and genuine connection.
In a new impact report, feedback from teens and college students in our intergenerational programs shows a clear change in attitudes toward older adults. The intergenerational relationships formed at DOROT helped participants bridge their differences in years and rethink assumptions about growing older.
Both younger and older generations reported greater awareness of the benefits of intergenerational relationships. They described their relationships as reciprocal, where both generations give and receive.
Our programs intentionally upend the idea that younger people are volunteers and older adults are simply recipients. Everyone acts in service to each other and to the intergenerational community they build.
