We were proud to have our Director of Advocacy, Eustacia Smith, and Director of Clinical and Social Services, Evelyn Agbesi, joined Human Services Council of New York at the recent rally to advocate for equal wages for nonprofit human services workers.

It’s simple: equal work deserves equal wages. Despite this, nonprofit human services workers earn 30% less than City workers — for the same job.

That’s why WSFSSH was proud to rally with the Campaign to support Int 0452 (Wage Equity Legislation), which would help close the pay gap and advance for the nonprofit human services workers who are the backbone of this city.

By creating a new wage requirement system that aligns nonprofit and City salaries, Int 0452 goes beyond short-term fixes. It creates an entirely new system that supports wage equity for the long-haul.

Since 2023, WSFSSH has held six Supervisors Convenings, creating space for supervisors across the organization to connect, learn, and strengthen their leadership.

Each convening has had its own focus, but together they reflect an ongoing investment in the people who help guide our teams and support our work every day. This latest convening brought together supervisors attending for the first time along with others who have participated since the beginning.

That mix speaks to the continued growth of leadership throughout WSFSSH. As we look ahead and continue shaping our organization’s future, our supervisors play an important role in supporting staff, strengthening our programs, and helping ensure residents receive the care and services they deserve.

Together, we are building the future of WSFSSH.

Final budget negotiations are happening NOW. Governor Kathy Hochul and the state legislature must prioritize supportive housing and include the additional $8 MILLION for the New York State Supportive Housing Program (NYSSHP) proposed in the Senate’s budget and $100 MILLION for the Homeless Housing Assistance Program (HHAP) proposed in the Assembly’s budget.

Housing is a human right. We are counting on our representatives in Albany to protect our most vulnerable neighbors.

At our Frederick Douglass Older Adult Center, music is doing more than filling the room, it’s building connection, confidence, and joy.

Through our partnership with the Bloomingdale School of Music, older adults are coming together to engage creatively, try something new, and share in moments that bring the community closer. Programs like this create space for expression, belonging, and meaningful connection right where it matters most.

“We need things like this especially in this neighborhood and especially in this time… it is just absolutely imperative we provide this if we want to make the impact that is in our mission.” – Christine Browning, Bloomingdale Faculty

This is what it looks like when partnership meets purpose.

A simple visit can go a long way.

Mr. Met surprised residents at our 129th Street building this week, turning an ordinary day into something truly special. Laughter filled the room, smiles were everywhere, and for many of our residents, it was a moment of connection, joy, and pure fun that doesn’t come around every day.

For our Mets fans, it was unforgettable. For all of us, it was a reminder of how meaningful these moments of community can be.

Last Friday, we celebrated the groundbreaking of WSFSSH at West 108th Street Phase II, where 84 new affordable homes for older adults will soon stand in place of a former parking garage.

It was a powerful moment to be together with so many people who helped move this project forward. We heard from a resident of our first West 108th Street building, who spoke to what it means to have a safe, stable place to call home and how housing like this supports independence, community, and dignity as we age.

This project has been years in the making, and it reflects what is possible when partners come together with a shared commitment to creating housing that truly meets the needs of older New Yorkers.

We are proud to continue building communities where people can age with dignity and remain connected to the neighborhoods they call home.

As the number of older adults experiencing and at-risk of homelessness rises, we’re faced with some hard truths: our systems – from shelters to supportive housing and beyond - aren’t set up to accommodate the needs of aging adults, and nursing homes and assisted living are not equipped to meet the needs of older adults coming from homelessness.

Earlier this week our Executive Director Paul Freitag spoke alongside other regional and national leaders in homelessness services, aging, and health care to highlight cross-system innovations to better meet the needs of older adults.

The conversation made one thing clear: addressing older adult homelessness will require stronger coordination across systems and a shared commitment to solutions that meet people where they are. We’re proud to be part of that work and to continue pushing it forward.
