Sesame Flyers International Sesame Flyers - Supporting Families, Celebrating Caribbean Culture
"Love a Kid Today and Everyday"

Over the past 30 years many of our young people who have benefitted from our various programs have now returned to hold positions within our agency such as Case Workers, Instructors, Security Guards and even Beacon Directors. Our youth Steel Orchestra otherwise known as our ambassadors have performed throughout the city for the likes of Mayor Bloomberg, BET ,Good Morning America and our New York State Governor, just to name a few. One of our Flagship Programs, the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) which we have contracted with the Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD) since 1995, has afforded us the opportunity to place and supervise inner city youth in over 40 major corporations in Manhattan as well as other companies in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. We have partnered with several High Schools & Community Colleges to provide year round accredited internship opportunities with our most recent partner being the New Community College at CUNY, the first new community college in over 40 years located in midtown Manhattan, the heart of New York City. Our most recently acquired Community Center located at I.S. 211 in Canarsie will feature our new Financial Literacy Program where we partner with The Street Academy to teach our youth personal financial responsibility and good decision making skills.

This Sunday, October 4th, New York will come together to celebrate a true Caribbean treasure a Caribbean legend, a voice that belongs to all of us. 🇹🇹🕊️

Sesame Flyers joins the Caribbean community in celebrating the extraordinary life and legacy of The Mighty Sparrow, the Calypso King of the World.

For generations, his music told our stories. Our humor, our politics, our struggles, our joy and our Caribbean way of seeing the world. His contribution to calypso and Caribbean culture will live far beyond his lifetime.

We encourage our Sesame Flyers family and the wider community to come out and honor a legend whose music helped carry Caribbean culture across the world.

Long live the Calypso King. 👑🇹🇹

PUBLIC NOTICE
Sesame Carnival will not participate in the 2027 Labor Day Adult Parade.

Masqueraders, designers, wire benders, costume makers, musicians, steelbands, artists and bandleaders are the foundation of this cultural institution. If Mas is the product, then Mas must be reflected in the investment, infrastructure and priorities surrounding Carnival.

We must also reconnect the next generation to the traditions that created this culture and ensure that Mas remains at the center of the Carnival experience.

Mas needs a reprieve. Carnival needs a reset. And we must be prepared to explore the alternative.

This is not about walking away from Carnival. It is about standing up for Mas.

❤️ THANK YOU, SESAME CARNIVAL FAMILY! ❤️

As we close another Labor Day Carnival, we want to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to every masquerader who chose to cross the road with Sesame Carnival. 🫶🏾

To our masqueraders, band leader, section leaders, designers, model coach, models, development director, volunteers, road team, DJs, dancers, sound system, staff, supporters, and everyone who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, we appreciate you. Your energy, patience, commitment, and love for the culture are what continue to make Sesame what it is.

We also want to acknowledge that not everyone had the experience they deserved on the road. Due to challenges with the infrastructure and our inability to properly secure and protect the band as planned, some of our masqueraders were negatively impacted.

For that, we sincerely apologize and take accountability.

Regardless of the circumstances surrounding those challenges, you registered with us and trusted us with your Carnival experience. We understand the disappointment and frustration of those who felt that experience fell short, and your concerns are not being dismissed.

We are listening. We are reviewing what happened, what was within our control, and what needs to change moving forward. Our masqueraders deserve to feel safe, protected, valued, and able to enjoy the road, and we remain committed to doing better.

To everyone who still showed up, stayed with us, supported one another, smiled, danced, and represented Sesame with pride THANK YOU. ❤️

The road may not have been perfect, but the love, culture, and spirit of our Sesame family remain strong.

With gratitude, accountability, and love,
Sesame Carnival / Sesame Flyers International ❤️

Thank you King Beenie Man for trying to help us out yesterday. We cannot say it actually worked 🫠, but it definitely gave us one of our favorite moments of the day 😂🔥

Executive Director Curtis Nelson fully immersed himself in the vibrant spirit of the WIADCA Junior Carnival, engaging directly with the young masqueraders and sharing in their excitement and joy. His presence reflected a strong commitment to nurturing the next generation of Carnival participants while encouraging them to embrace, understand, and proudly carry forward their cultural heritage.

Through his hands-on involvement, Nelson demonstrated that leadership in Carnival extends beyond the spectacle—it is about responsibility, mentorship, cultural preservation, and creating meaningful experiences for our youth. His interaction with the Junior Masqueraders added an extra layer of excitement to the celebration, reinforcing the importance of keeping our traditions alive while inspiring the next generation to confidently take their place on the road.
