Thanks to The Seamen's Church Institute for sharing your mission to aid the workers of one of the most important and invisible industries. Most of us have no idea that NY hosts the largest port on the east coast of North and South America. The workers only get 3 hours shore leave after months at sea, and the hard working staff and volunteers here make sure that these folks connect to all kids of life affirming and life saving resources. Thanks for hosting us in your green and friendly oasis in a swirl of trucks and economic activity.

Big thanks to Ted mapp.nyc and DropMapp who took his morning to inspire our infrastructure class “The Works” of what a swarm of active citizens can do when empowered to act independently to fix the city. His project seeks to improve 311, and let people report issues more effectively and with less friction and in the future, hopefully get govt. departments to respond to requests with a photo of the completed work. Ted is a superhero, and I know he’s inspired our group to someday own a gardening pickaxe so we can bust up compacted tree pits wherever we go! Best of luck Ted with all your projects and thanks for your work.

Hey! Our newest class, Seeing Theater: from Script to stage has spots open! In Script to Stage, participants don’t just watch theater and film—they meet the professionals who bring it to life. This class is a hands-on exploration of the production process, divided into three rotating weekly experiences:

Seeing the Work (12:30 PM – 5:00 PM): Attending 12 live matinee performances throughout the year.

Meeting the Makers (12:00 PM – 4:00 PM): Taking 13 behind-the-scenes field trips to visit working theater and film professionals. We will meet with a playwright, costume designer, pyrotechnician, scenic painter, stop-motion animation studio, and cinematographer.

Creating Our Own (12:00 PM – 2:00 PM): Participating in 13 workshop sessions dedicated to reading scripts, discussing the shows we’ve seen, and developing our own original characters, costumes, and set designs.

PROJECTS & PROMPTS

Instead of traditional homework, participants will keep an ongoing show journal (written or video reviews) to track their thoughts. Weekly creative prompts will mirror what we are doing in class—such as drafting a review after a show week, designing a concept during a tour week, or reading a scene before a performance.

For students who want to dive deeper, we offer extended work prompts. We highly encourage students to create their own original work throughout the year, and we will actively build out opportunities for them to share it with the group. brooklynappleacademy.org/scriptstage
