Gender Equality Law Center

Gender Equality Law Center We are a non profit public interest law firm working to combat gender-based discrimination that creates barriers to economic security and advancement

The Gender Equality Law Center (GELC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2014. GELC’s mission is to break down barriers created by gender discrimination and gender stereotyping that limit equal opportunities in education, employment, and in other spheres of public and private life. Promoting economic equality in education and the workplace will help ensure full access to a wide varie

ty of benefits and services without regard to gender or perceived gender. GELC uses an innovative strategy to accomplish these goals through a combination of strategic impact litigation, training, and education and non-litigation advocacy. GELC uses strategic litigation to enforce and expand existing anti-discrimination laws and legal protections with a focus on policy and procedural changes. GELC is a unique organization which uses training and resource development for lawyers with the goal of increasing the number of private lawyers willing to represent low-income victims of discrimination. GELC Staff and its volunteers maintain a vibrant commitment to non-litigation advocacy to educate the public and change policies within the government and private sectors.

ICYMI, our latest newsletter is now out!

Stay tuned to learn how GELC will continue to empower low-income women and LGBTQ+ individuals against gender-based discrimination — especially in the midst of rapidly-decreasing legal protections for intersectional minority groups nationwide. With your support, we'll be able to hire more lawyers and advocates to advise, counsel, and represent individuals from vulnerable communities in the year ahead.

The year behind us has been challenging for this country as a whole, particularly for many of the clients we represent: transgender and non-binary individuals, and/or Latinx workers who are being threatened and detained by ICE, even when they have legal documentation.

A day with a problematic history in this country, Thanksgiving remains as our annual reminder to highlight what we’re grateful for amidst a year of collective uncertainty and doubt. Now as we move towards the year ahead, the GELC team remains grateful for all that we’ve accomplished throughout 2025, thanks to your support.

There’s no doubt about it. The Gender Equality Law Center (GELC) has had a challenging year. In addition to providing direct services to hundreds of women and LGBTQ+ individuals, including in impact litigation and facing gender-based discrimination, our work has escalated since the current federal administration took office in January. GELC has ramped up its work to push back on the Trump administration’s decision to strip the rights of transgender and non-binary individuals, and to threaten the lives of immigrant New Yorkers.

The demand for our work — now more than ever — is growing as our legal and advocacy team seeks to meet the increased needs of our communities. We look forward to sharing updates with you about our groundbreaking work as we continue to break down barriers to gender, racial, and economic justice. We hope you will join us in our efforts.

Native women earn 53 cents for every dollar a white man makes.

That means Native women have to work almost twice as long to earn the same pay. This isn't just a statistic—it's about real families struggling to afford food, medicine, and basic needs. Pay equity is about survival.

We joined National Women's Law Center and 170+ organizations to condemn Trump's cruel and lawless anti-trans executive order. This order doesn't “protect” women from any real threat, but actively endangers ALL women and gender-nonconforming individuals.
