We place strong emphasis on public, socially engaged artwork, sustainable communities and social justice.

Open Source is a participant-driven art initiative in Brooklyn, NY that provides space, community and conceptual context for creative play and critical commentary. Open Source is a Brooklyn based non-profit that serves as a nexus for contemporary art and local neighborhood cultures, with a history of supporting emerging artists who, through the development of new works, challenge how, when and whe

re contemporary art intersects and integrates with the everyday lives of everyday people. Open Source supports a cross-disciplinary and participatory approach to art and art-making as a way to promote artistic dialogue and critical commentary. Impacted by the open source movement—which promotes freely shared, educational software and information—Open Source Gallery applies a similar philosophy to create an approachable space, dedicated to the dissemination and accessibility of contemporary, visual art. Since opening our doors, we have served hundreds of artists, both local and international, through our exhibits, events, and programs. Our gallery creates an alternative space that eschews the traditional, and often intimidating, notion of the “white cube,” creating an environment that is inclusive and welcoming for an intergenerational and multicultural audience. Our programs include:

Exhibitions: monthly conceptually-driven exhibits in a wide array of media from both local and international artists

Church of Monika: a monthly, non-denominational lecture series designed to promote active critical thinking and discussion about art, community involvement and cultural understanding. December Soup Kitchen: a yearly program that invites the community to cook, eat and converse. How to Build a Fire: a monthly storytelling series that explores the course of a narrative, not only as it is heard, but how it is experienced

Adult and Family Workshops: several times a year, workshops are offered at the gallery space in conjunction with exhibits. KOKO Open Source: our children’s program that offers workshops at the intersection of art, technology and sustainability

Known as a “Musicians’ Musician,” Pam Fleming’s lyrical and soulful trumpet sound has enriched the vibe of many bands and recordings. You may have heard her with Hazmat Modine, Isle Of Klezbos, Metropolitan Klezmer, Gov’t Mule, Warren Haynes (of the Allman Brothers), Reggae star Burning Spear, T***s & The Maytals, Mighty Sparrow, Natalie Merchant, Meredith Monk, Rachelle Garniez, and Swunky Z Brass Band.

Open Source Gallery is pleased to announce The 7th Time, a fully inhabitable installation by Sáandlaanaay (Kimberly Fulton Orozco). The exhibition will be on view September 5 – October 11, 2026, with an opening reception on September 5 from 7-9PM

Seven is the number of times, on average, it takes a person to leave an abusive relationship. The 7th Time is an installation by interdisciplinary artist Sáandlaanaay. It tells the story of the labor of leaving and the interior strength required to imagine a different life before that life exists outside a person's own body.

The gallery is transformed into a room that looks familiar. A relative's kitchen. A friend's living room. The house of a neighbor whose door you could knock on. Visitors are invited to sit, to make coffee, to handle the books on the shelf, to listen to the tapes left playing. The room asks nothing of anyone who enters it. It does not require an audience to decode it to experience familiarity.

Sáandlaanaay, Kimberly Fulton Orozco, is a Kaigani Haida Raven of the Yakhw' Jaanaas clan and a citizen of the Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. Working across Mexican, Haida, and Scottish inheritance, her practice transforms objects of memory into statements of cultural endurance and self-determination. "This week's Open Sound Concert features the Bennett Paster Group - join us on Wednesday August 19th at 7pm!

Bennett Paster will debut a new group at Open Source Gallery on August 19, 2026. Featuring master Brazilian musicians Guillherme Monteiro on guitar and Alex Kautz on drums, versatile bassist Adam Chilenski and Paster on keyboards, the band will perform a blend of classic 60s-80s Brazilian groovy jazz alongside originals by band members. Expect a fun and funky evening in the Slope.

"This week's Open Sound Concert features Dawn Drake () and ZapOte () - join us on Wednesday August 12th at 7pm! Drake & ZapOte

Dawn Drake & ZapOte is a female “Global Groove” ensemble which celebrates women in world music and incorporates Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms, pop and funk into a mix that is meant for dancing! With original lyrics that focus on love, empathy, environmental and social justice themes, the band offers a chance to celebrate life and create community through shared experience. A genre bender, ZapOte has a unique sound based on Dawn’s musical influences which draw from Cuban salsa and timba, Haitian kompa as well as Congolese ndombolo and Nigerian Afro-beat. You’ll find some of New York’s finest female musicians playing in this band!

This week's Open Sound Concert features AMARYLLIS II - join us on Wednesday August 5th at 7pm! Perform at Open Source Gallery!!!

“Ambient art songs for a new era,” AMARYLLIS 2 is the nom de guerre of Brooklyn couple Paula Jeanine Bennett and Richard X Bennett. They will play pieces from their upcoming Ropeadope Records release “Songs of Ache and Rapture”. Singer/lyricist/percussionist Paula Jeanine conveys the complicated moods of hope amidst the wreckage of modern society while pianist rXb contributes joyful and soulful splashes of color on the piano. Emotionally grooving catharsis at twilight.

Join us tomorrow (Friday, July 31st) at 7pm, for the second HTBAF Storytelling session of Season 12, featuring storytellers Aida Zilelian, Aditya Mayya, Jude Treder-Wolff, and Wendy Lee Vazquez.

This summer has made everyone reluctant to have anything to do with building a fire so we’re extending the challenge. Give us your best “Cooling Off” story! The feel of a cool beverage going down your throat. That first breeze of relief when you enter an air conditioned room. Standing with your eyes closed, fists clenched trying to control your breathing. The realization when that hot date two months ago hasn’t kept your temperature elevated. Whatever cooling off means to you, we want your story to bring us the chills we need.

This week's Open Sound Concert features Mara Rosenbloom, Kyoko Kitamura, & Claire DeBrunner - join us Wednesday, 7/29 at 7pm!

Pianist, composer, & bandleader Mara Rosenbloom has been called “a whole hearted poet of the piano,” – she is a builder & a synthesist; a fiercely lyrical composer & improviser (All About Jazz).

The New York Times has praised her penchant for “full-bore group improvising,” while The Chicago Reader has written that her ensemble “achieves an elusive chemistry and degree of spontaneous interaction that transcends mental boundaries.” With an interest in building community by encouraging honest expression and interactive dialogue through music – human connection has been a focus of Rosenbloom’s work throughout the past decade, and as a result, powerful group interaction has become a hallmark of Rosenbloom’s sound.

Tonight Rosenbloom convenes a trio of highly experienced improvisers for an entirely spontaneous set of music:

This is the final week to see Identities, an exhibition by Hidemi Takagi. Stop by during our open hours this weekend, and join us to celebrate the closing of the show on Thursday, July 30.

Everyone is invited to see the exhibit, meet the artist, Hidemi Takagi, and enjoy refreshments. Kids are welcome!

IDENTITIES is a photography and interview project centering mixed-race teenagers. Takagi builds long term relationships with the teenagers to gather stories that are both visual and verbal, composing complex and whimsically self-costuming portraits of mixed-race life and its public and private faces. Through IDENTITIES, Takagi documents biracial/multiracial people’s roots and the cultural tendrils that have grown and intertwined from them, and addresses the issues of mixed-race identity, racism, and immigration in America and other countries.

This week's Open Sound Concert features Akiko Pavolka - join us tomorrow (Wednesday, 7/22) at 7pm!

Tokyo born Akiko Pavolka is a New York-based musician, composer and educator whose strikingly original music blends pop and jazz with the music and sensibilities of her native Japan. Her performances take you on a journey away from your everyday life and into a realm of wandering migrants. From Mongolian nomads to bus riders in Sunset Park to a dog shot into space, they seek out the truths that we all share, and are given voice in her unforgettable songs. Akiko Pavolka - voice and keys, Ollie Hirvonen - guitar, Matt Pavolka - bass, Bill Campbell - drums

Native South Korean bassist Jeong Lim Yang has been a powerhouse in New York City’s music scene since 2011, collaborating with icons like Jason Palmer and Kenny Wollesen. Her debut as a leader, Déjà Vu (2017), was honored as NPR’s "Best Debut Album of the Year." Since then, she has gained international acclaim through the experimental collective Mute and her 2022 reimagining of Mary Lou Williams’s work, Zodiac Suite: Reassured, performed at venues like Lincoln Center and SF Jazz. In 2025, Yang released Synchronicity, a quartet album featuring Mat Maneri and Jacob Sacks that showcases her sophisticated original compositions.

This week's Open Sound Concert features The Lucky Otters - join us on Wednesday (7/15) at 7pm!

The Lucky Otters is Nick Balaban, Kevin Batchelor, J. Walter Hawkes, J Granelli and Diego Voglino. Not unlike otters in the wild, they are as relentlessly playful as they are serious. Their music is influenced by everything you’ve ever heard, though the Jazz, R&B, Country, Rock and whatever Singer-Songwriter music or Americana is is probly the most obvious. They have individually played/worked with everyone from Ray Charles to Keith Richards to Norah Jones to Mose Allison to Bruce Springsteen to The Sun Ra Arkestra to Patti Labelle to Sting to Shaggy to The Count Basie Orchestra to Steel Pulse to Barrington Levy to… you get the picture. We LOVE to play!
