Black Women in Architecture Brunch is Back!

There is something so special about a room full of Black women in architecture. 💛

Join us this year for the NYCOBA|NOMA Black Women in Architecture Brunch at the historic McKissack & McKissack in Midtown Manhattan. Founded in 1905, McKissack & McKissack is recognized as the oldest Black-owned architecture and engineering firm in the United States, with a legacy that has helped shape our built environment for more than a century. What better place to gather, connect, and celebrate one another?

Whether you’re a student, emerging professional, or seasoned practitioner, this brunch is an opportunity to build community, share experiences, make meaningful connections, and celebrate the incredible contributions of Black women in architecture and design.

What a day! 🤎

On August 8, NYCOBA|NOMA welcomed our young designers to Union Square for this year’s Project Pipeline Design Camp at Parsons School of Design at The New School.

Throughout the day, campers explored architecture through the lens of community and social equity, developing their own ideas through sketching, plans, elevations, and model making. We ended the day with students proudly sharing their designs and the thinking behind them.

This year is especially meaningful as 2026 marks 20 years of NOMA Project Pipeline nationally For two decades, this program has helped young people see themselves as future architects, designers, and changemakers and we are proud to continue that work here in New York City.

A huge thank you to our Project Pipeline Chairs, Alyssa Clayburn and Anny Chan, for the time, care, coordination, and energy they poured into making this year’s camp possible. So much goes into creating a day like this, and we are incredibly grateful for their leadership.

We also want to thank our Brownstone Sponsors: SOM, Allison Lane , and MG2, along with all of our NYCOBA NOMA sponsors, for continuing to invest in our chapter and the next generation of designers.

And of course, thank you to our volunteers, committee members, families, and everyone who helped bring the day together. We could not do this work without you.

Our Project Pipeline Design Camp is almost here, and it’s time for our final volunteer meeting!

Join us for an in-person camp dry run as we walk through the curriculum, review volunteer roles, and prepare materials to make sure we’re ready to give our campers an unforgettable experience on Saturday, August 8.

Special thanks to Patrick Stephens, MPS, Rhamgurav Robinson, and Youth Leader Kevin McKenzie of the Center for Community Alternatives for sharing powerful conversations around mentorship, restorative justice, and creating pathways into architecture, engineering, and construction for youth in at risk communities.

When we invest in community, we create opportunity.

Looking forward to continuing this work and building programming that connects young people to careers in the AEC industry.

Last week, NYCOBA | NOMA partnered with Handel Architects for a high-energy speed networking event in there New York City office, bringing together mentors and emerging professionals for meaningful, fast-paced conversations.

Thank you to the dedicated mentors who shared their time, insight, and guidance, and to the students from NOMAS for showing up engaged, prepared, and ready to connect.

We appreciate Handel Architects for hosting and creating space for these important connections. Looking forward to continuing the momentum.

Design can play a direct role in rebuilding lives and strengthening communities. Join NYCOBA NOMA Community Engagement Committee for Building Community: Leveraging Design to Rebuild: Supporting Justice-Impacted Communities, a hybrid event on April 24 from 6:00–7:30 PM at Urbahn Architects. This session brings together AEC professionals, community leaders, and youth voices to explore how mentorship, access, and exposure can create real pathways into architecture, engineering, and construction for at risk communities. Featuring Patrick Stephens, Rhamgurav Robinson, and youth leader Keven McKnight of
Center for Community Alternatives, and moderated by Bradley DeBose, the conversation will focus on turning ideas into action through intentional programming and long-term engagement.

If you’re interested in equity in the built environment and want to be part of a meaningful, solutions-driven discussion, this is a conversation worth being in.

It all begins with you.

Every initiative we launch, every committee we form, and every professional milestone we celebrate exists for one core purpose: to uplift our students and emerging professionals.

Today, we are sharing the spotlight with the Women Student Leaders at the helm of our NOMAS Chapters across New York. These women aren’t just “future” architects—they are leading the charge now. From organizing charrettes to advocating for spatial equity on campus, they are the foundation upon which our next chapter, our organization is built.

As NYCOBA NOMA moves into our next 50 years of celebration, community growth, and leadership, we remain committed to ensuring the path is clear for those following in our footsteps.
