Nearly three decades of work. One extraordinary honor.

On Friday night, Ubuntu Pathways received an award we never saw coming.

At The Herald’s annual Citizens of the Year Awards, Ubuntu was not among the announced nominees or award categories. Then, in a surprise moment, The Herald presented Ubuntu with the Sister Ethel Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing our “decades of uplifting the disenfranchised people of Gqeberha.”

Named for Sister Ethel Normoyle, The Herald’s first Citizen of the Year in 1989, this special award honors a lifetime of sustained service to the people of Nelson Mandela Bay.

For Ubuntu, it is an extraordinary recognition of nearly 30 years of work alongside this community, and it belongs to every staff member, family, partner and supporter who has been part of that journey.
