Are designers solving the wrong problem?

"The role of the designer is to truly design the context—not the tree."

On this episode of the AIGA Design Podcast, Todd Bracher shares why the most effective design solutions come from understanding the forces that shape them: human needs, business realities, legal constraints, competition, and more.

It's a compelling conversation about systems thinking, innovation, and what design can achieve when we stop focusing on the object alone.

Meet Olivia Moore, a designer whose work is deeply rooted in culture, community, and creativity.

As a freelance Senior Designer specializing in UX/UI and web design, Olivia has spent more than 11 years crafting digital experiences that are as thoughtful as they are visually compelling. “For me, design isn’t just about how it looks,” she says. “It’s about how it feels, how it functions, and how it connects.”

That same philosophy has shaped her leadership journey with AIGA Baltimore. Since joining the board in 2022 as Operations Chair, Olivia has helped guide the chapter through a period of growth and transformation, serving as President from 2023–2025 and continuing her leadership through 2027.

“My journey with AIGA Baltimore has been one of the most transformative chapters of my career,” she shares. “AIGA has challenged me to grow beyond the pixels and prototypes, allowing me to become a creative leader, an advocate, and a bridge builder. Through this work, I’ve helped elevate voices in my community and contribute to shaping a more inclusive and vibrant future for design.”

For Olivia, design holds a kind of magic that turns ideas into impact and creativity into meaningful change.

We’re also celebrating AIGA Baltimore for their recent wins at the 32nd Annual Communicator Awards, earning recognition for their Brand Refresh, Website Redesign, and Flux Student Design Competition. A huge congratulations to the chapter for this well-deserved recognition and for the inspiring work they continue to do! 🫶

The 2026 midterms are on the horizon, and design has a role to play.

AIGA is now accepting submissions for Design for Democracy, our nonpartisan initiative that invites designers to create posters encouraging voter engagement at the local, state, and national levels. In partnership with the League of Women Voters of the US, this campaign uses design as a tool for public engagement and democratic participation.

AIGA members: Submit your original poster for the opportunity to be featured in our public gallery, where selected works will be available for free download, printing, and distribution.

Not a member? You can still support the initiative by sharing posters once the gallery launches and helping amplify these messages across your network!
