What does it take to choose the best in book and cover design?

Earlier this month, the 50 Books | 50 Covers jury gathered at Pratt Institute for the return of our in-person review process—the first time in years that jurors have been able to experience the submissions together in the same room.

Seeing the books in person makes all the difference. From the feel of the paper to the printing, and binding, jurors were able to engage with each book as a complete physical object, not just an image on a screen.

We’re thankful to every designer, publisher, and team who submitted work this year! We look forward to continuing this renewed tradition in the years ahead.

"Treat your employees like they're volunteers."

That's the leadership philosophy Seth Johnson brings from years of leading volunteer communities into his work as Design Director at IBM.

His perspective: people don't give their best work because they're required to. They do it because they believe in the mission, feel respected, and see meaning in what they're creating.

"If the answer is no, you might get the work, but you're not going to get the commitment."

Last week in NYC, they visited the AIGA collection of 50 Books | 50 Covers winners spanning more than a century at Columbia University Rare Book & Manuscript Library. That experience offered a rare look at the evolution of book design before they gathered to evaluate the next generation of exceptional work.⁠
