Join NYCLA on Thursday, October 15, 2026, for the 59th Charles Evans Hughes Memorial Lecture, featuring Professor John Q. Barrett, Benjamin N. Cardozo Professor of Law at St. John’s University School of Law, and a nationally recognized constitutional law scholar and legal historian.

In his lecture, “Presidential Material” Should Be “Supreme Court Material,” and Vice Versa: The Charles Evans Hughes Model,” Professor Barrett will explore what Charles Evans Hughes’s remarkable career can teach us about leadership in public service and the relationship between the presidency and the Supreme Court.

First Amendment Does Not Permit Excluding Disfavored Journalists from Covering the White House

NYCLA President Ronald C. Minkoff has issued a statement urging the White House to allow journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and POLITICO to resume working in the White House.

In his statement, President Minkoff discusses the First Amendment protections for freedom of speech and freedom of the press and cites U.S. Supreme Court precedent.

Constitution Day & Citizenship Day

Today, September 17, we commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787.

Reflections on the 25th Anniversary of 9/11

NYCLA President Ronald C. Minkoff reflects on September 11, 2001, when NYCLA’s headquarters were at 14 Vesey Street, around the corner from the World Trade Center. Although the Association could not access its building for months, NYCLA quickly organized pro bono legal assistance for families who lost loved ones. Members also assisted displaced workers and small businesses affected by the attacks.

Twenty-five years later, President Minkoff reflects on NYCLA’s continuing commitment to public service and remembers those who continue to grieve.

“To those still grieving the loss of loved ones on 9/11, we say we are deeply sorry you are bereaved.”

Protecting Midterm Elections from Disruption by the USPS

NYCLA President Ronald C. Minkoff has issued a statement urging the U.S. Postal Service to refrain from implementing its August 26, 2026, rules governing mail-in ballots.

The statement raises concerns that the new requirements could create “unnecessary and burdensome hurdles for voters” and disrupt the upcoming election season. It also discusses the recent federal court injunction blocking implementation of the rules.

Today, we celebrate not only America’s independence, but the enduring principles embodied in the Declaration, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. These Charters of Freedom continue to remind us that liberty, justice, and the rule of law require the stewardship of every generation.
