When Tae Kim moved back to Honolulu to help his mom with her longtime Korean restaurant, he wasn’t expecting to fall in love with the hospitality industry. Inspired by his experience working with his mom, Tae moved back to New York and started the first location of Kona Coffee Roasters, at 57 2nd Ave. Today, there are two other locations in Chelsea and Midtown, perfect for Tae who can be seen riding his bike from location to location. The coffee is highly specialty, with beans selected from a specific farm on the Big Island of Hawai’i, chosen after many in-person tours and tastings. The pastries also pay homage to Hawai’i, with tropical flavors like the guava strawberry kougin aman. Though being an independent merchant can be difficult, Tae is grateful for the community that the East Village and EVIMA offers; “It’s hard to change things in the neighborhood as an individual, but as a group you have collective power.”

Though today the East Village might seem like a special hair salon district, when Whistle Salon first opened its doors in 2004, there were only four other salons in the area. Now, there are five on the same block alone. Owner of Whistle Salon, Will Johnson, attributes this to the characteristically narrow layout of East Village storefronts: “It’s perfect for [the salon] business!” Whistle Salon customers seem to feel the same. Will and the other stylists have had many of the same customers for 15-20 years. Now, some of them send their kids to the salon!
Whistle Salon joined EVIMA to be part of the larger East Village community, important to their ethos of being a community salon. Despite the difficulties of being an independent merchant, Will feels like there are even more small businesses in the East Village, making it a small business destination. Some favorites include , , and .
In need of a funky cut or a maintenance makeover? Head to Whistle Salon!

If you popped by Alphabet City Beer Co. last week, you might have had the chance to catch doing a round of East Village trivia. It’s events like these, and countless others, that make ABC Beer. Co the “living room of the East Village,” as co-founder Zach Mack describes it. The cafe / bar / beer store / specialty grocer / seller of bread opened its doors in 2012. The spot, which was once a beer hall in the 1800s, is perfect for large gatherings or intimate catch-ups. Parents stop by after school pick-up to say hi, and regulars host their birthday parties, in turn bringing more regulars. The community of customers is great, but Zach also highly values the community of other Avenue C businesses. His perfect night? Dinner at .nyc, cocktails at and , and then, of course, a nightcap at ABC Beer Co. Stopping by adjacent businesses for a drink or bite after work has helped Zach form a close-knit community in the area, also helped by EVIMA; “I love EVIMA meetings because it makes you aware of everything other businesses are going through.” ABC Beer Co., though loyal to the East Village, has also expanded to Governor’s Island with a different business, , who hosts a stage for another East Village spot, .fm. Of having an East Village business, Zach says, “It’s easy to put a lot into it, because you’ll get a lot back.”
