If you popped by Alphabet City Beer Co. last week, you might have had the chance to catch doing a round of East Village trivia. It’s events like these, and countless others, that make ABC Beer. Co the “living room of the East Village,” as co-founder Zach Mack describes it. The cafe / bar / beer store / specialty grocer / seller of bread opened its doors in 2012. The spot, which was once a beer hall in the 1800s, is perfect for large gatherings or intimate catch-ups. Parents stop by after school pick-up to say hi, and regulars host their birthday parties, in turn bringing more regulars. The community of customers is great, but Zach also highly values the community of other Avenue C businesses. His perfect night? Dinner at .nyc, cocktails at and , and then, of course, a nightcap at ABC Beer Co. Stopping by adjacent businesses for a drink or bite after work has helped Zach form a close-knit community in the area, also helped by EVIMA; “I love EVIMA meetings because it makes you aware of everything other businesses are going through.” ABC Beer Co., though loyal to the East Village, has also expanded to Governor’s Island with a different business, , who hosts a stage for another East Village spot, .fm. Of having an East Village business, Zach says, “It’s easy to put a lot into it, because you’ll get a lot back.”
