New York Urban League

New York Urban League Education, Employment, Empowerment, & Advocacy. The New York Urban League, serving NYC since 1919.

NEW YORK URBAN LEAGUE was founded in 1919 and is one of 98 affiliates of the National Urban League. The mission of NYUL is to enable African Americans and other underserved communities to secure a first-class education, economic self-reliance, and equal respect of their civil rights through programs, services and advocacy. Headquartered in Harlem, NYUL serves Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens and the Bronx. Each year we connect with over 8,000 residents providing direct service in the areas of employment, education and empowerment through financial literacy and access to technology. Through education, the NYUL ensures that families have access to quality educational services that lead to academic achievement, develop students who are competitive college applicants, and instills career and entrepreneurial aspirations that prepare students for 21st century careers in growing industries. Employment and Career Services prepares unemployed residents for entry and re-entry into a highly competitive job market through job readiness workshops, skill training and placement service. Visit www.nyul.org for more information about the New York Urban League and its programs.

We’re closing out 3rd Space 2026 where it began: Brooklyn.
On November 17, we’re back at 333 Lounge for Beauty: In the Black, a conversation with Black entrepreneurs building businesses across the beauty space.
Hair. Makeup. Fragrance. Skincare. And the businesses being built around them.
We’re talking ownership, growth, lessons learned, and what it takes to turn talent, expertise, and an idea into something you own.
No formal conference room. No long presentations.
Just people doing it, people thinking about doing it, and a room where the conversation can get interesting.
333 Lounge | Brooklyn
Tuesday, November 17 | 5:30 PM
Come for the conversation. Stay for the connections.

Our President & CEO, Arva Rice, shared how honored she was to march and serve as a Parade Marshal in this year’s African-American Day Parade.

The parade’s roots run deep in New York Urban League history. In 1968, NYUL President & CEO Livingston Wingate co-founded the African-American Day Parade alongside Conrad Peters and a committee of 11 community leaders, officially stepping off in Harlem on September 21, 1969.

Around that same time, a legacy of community and empowerment was born through the college football classic—later named the Whitney M. Young Jr. Memorial Football Classic—which raised vital scholarship funds for Black students and brought HBCU excellence to Yankee Stadium with iconic matchups like Morgan State vs. Grambling State.
Swipe through the carousel to see highlights from a powerful day celebrating Harlem, Black culture, and community leadership! 📸

Grambling State & Legacy Scholars: President Arva Rice and NYUL Board Chair Shalima Holmes connecting with 1981 Whitney M. Young Jr. Scholar, Robin Semple!

Leaders & Legacy: Arva Rice with Judge Machelle Sweeting.
Justice in Action: Arva and Shalima catching up with Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.

Statewide Impact: Arva standing strong with New York State Attorney General Letitia “Tish” James.

Parade Marshals: Arva alongside fellow Marshals The Honorable Marie Moss and culinary legend Chef Charles Gabriel of Charles Pan-Fried Chicken!

What a powerful display of Black Excellence and community heritage. Here’s to honoring our past and building our future

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the heroes who responded with courage, compassion, and selflessness.

We remember the families who were forever changed, the first responders who put their lives on the line, and the countless acts of kindness and unity that followed.

May we never forget the lives, the sacrifices, and the resilience that shaped our nation.
