roup have teamed up to produce the Harlem Shakespeare Festival™, a newly created theatre festival spanning across Harlem with ongoing programming from late summer through early spring. The festival, now celebrating it’s 9th season was formed with a social justice mission to foster understanding and unity in the arts by producing special events and plays with multicultural casts, with a special emphasis in giving center stage opportunities to women, youth and especially classically trained actors of color. The Festival, inaugurated in summer 2013, brings Shakespeare scripts alive featuring 3-5 Shakespeare and modern plays, master classes, panel discussions, workshops, international symposiums, artist talk-backs, Shakespeare4Kids, ShakespeareInMusic, ShakespeareOnFilm and Shakespeare-In-The-Open-Air.

GAIL COOPER-HECHT designed costumes for Take Wing And Soar Productions and the Harlem Shakespeare Festival for more than a decade. Some of the shows she worked on included OTHELLO: The Moor of Venice, the world premieres of MASSINISSA: And The Tragedy of The House of Thunder and Saviour?, The SABLE SERIES: The History of Black Shakespearean Actors. She won the New York Innovative Theatre Award for Best Costumes for the Take Wing And Soar/ New Heritage production of The Importance of Being Earnest and the Broadway World Berkshire Award for Best Costume Design Of A Play Or Musical for BECOMING OTHELLO: A Black Girl’s Journey staged at Shakespeare & Company.

Her other design credits include NFT’s The Wash, 'Telling Tales Out of School, Camp Logan, The Most Dangerous Man In America, among others. She enjoyed an expansive career of costume design both on Broadway and off..

We celebrate Gail’s extraordinary talent and send her family and friends much love and peace. Farewell Gail you shall be remembered fondly.

Harlem Shakespeare Festival and Take Wing And Soar Productions Classical Actor Anja Lee passed away on December 2, 2024.

We remember her with great love in our productions as Cordelia in King Lear (2010), Sophonisba in Massinissa: And the Tragedy of Thunder (2011) and all-female OTHELLO (2020) and others. She was truly special and talented indeed. We will surely miss her indeed!

We wish her mother Elisabeth, her family and friends many, many condolences.

Rest in Peace Dearest Sweet Anja.
