Join the Lewis Latimer House for Open House New York Weekend! Visitors will have the opportunity to experience free guided tours of the museum. Come explore the "Light Up the World: The Legacy of Lewis H. Latimer" permanent exhibition as part of a guided or self-guided tour.

Guided tours on October 17 will be offered at 12:15PM, 1:15PM, 2:15PM, and 3:15PM.

Thank you for joining us at this month’s STEAM Saturday! We had the pleasure of partnering with guest artist and illustrator, Jesse Lambert for a hands-on zine-making workshop inspired by the trees of Queens! In celebration of City of Forest Day, we explored the importance of our local trees, experimented with paper pop-up techniques, and discovered native plants through a scavenger hunt in our gardens.

We’re so proud to share the incredible work of Queens-based comic artist and illustrator, Jesse Lambert, who has created a comic about the Lewis Latimer House and Lewis Latimer’s legacy! Through thoughtful and imaginative illustrations, Jesse brings Latimer’s story to life, highlighting the creativity and innovation that continue to make his legacy so powerful today. We’re grateful to see Latimer’s story interpreted through the perspective of a local artist and shared with new audiences.

And there’s more! 🎃 This Halloween, we’ll be hosting a costume contest at the Lewis Latimer House, and winners will receive a free copy of Jesse’s comic. Come celebrate with us, show off your best costume, and take home a copy of this inspiring work!

As we continue to uplift Lewis Latimer’s legacy, we are excited to also amplify the work of contemporary Black innovators around the world who embody Latimer’s mindset of imagination, connection and resilience! Today, we’re proud to spotlight Fallon Aayan!

Fallon is a Black, q***r, non-binary visionary and the Founder & CEO of STEAM URBAN, a nonprofit reshaping education through STEAM, environmental justice, and expressive arts. They lead A Healing Sanctuary, an urban farm in Newark cultivating both food and community healing while increasing access to fresh, culturally relevant produce.

Their work is grounded in activism and collective liberation, including leadership within the NJ Black Farmers Cooperative supporting Black and urban farmers across New Jersey. Fallon’s practice sits at the intersection of education, land stewardship, and liberation, centering Black and Brown youth in transformative, hands-on learning experiences.

As an adjunct professor and radical educator, they design curriculum that reconnects people to land, identity, and collective power.

In this collaborative and interactive experience, students get to explore the incredible life and legacy of Lewis Latimer and develop their own innovative solutions! Inspired by Latimer's contributions and problem-solving approaches, students participate in a hands-on paper circuit activity and design challenge scaled for different grade bands.

Only 48 hours remain in the Friends of Lewis Latimer House Campaign!

Together, we have made meaningful progress—but we still need your help to reach our goal: $4,600 raised toward our $12,000 goal, $7,400 remaining to reach our goal

Last Saturday, our community gathered to celebrate Lewis Latimer’s 178th birthday and the mindset of imagination, connection, and resilience that defined his life.

The celebration was a joyful reminder that Latimer’s light continues to shine. His story still inspires young people to imagine new possibilities, overcome barriers, and recognize their own power to shape the future.

Choose monthly to join Latimer Illuminaries and keep your impact going all year. September 30 is also the deadline to receive Founding Member recognition and a special-edition membership card.

Thank you to everyone who joined last Saturday for a day of creativity and joy! We loved seeing our community come together to celebrate the spirit of innovation that Latimer continues to inspire. Families and visitors of all ages got to cultivate the Lewis Latimer Mindset to create, explore, dance, and discover new possibilities.
