Yesterday, Meta reached a settlement with 47 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories over the design of Facebook and Instagram, including features that put children and teens at risk by making the platforms addictive. This settlement marks a meaningful step in the right direction for kids’ safety online.

Under the settlement, Meta must make significant changes to how teens use its apps, including a two-hour daily time limit, nighttime restrictions that turn off access to its apps, and expanded parental and guardian supervision controls.

This settlement reinforces an important principle: tech companies must bear the onus to build safety into their products by design. Now, the federal government has the opportunity to build on this momentum, make prevention the standard, and put the rest of the tech industry on notice.

Last week, Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) hosted a press conference bringing together human trafficking survivors, advocates, and law enforcement leaders to raise awareness about preventing human trafficking on Long Island and in Queens and the urgent need for strong prevention, enforcement, and support for survivors.

PACT’s Advocacy Manager, Sheena Dumé, spoke about the importance of survivor leadership, the reality that human trafficking can happen anywhere, and the need for the reauthorization of the Trafficking Victims Protections Act (TVPA), a cornerstone federal law that involves a three-prong approach for responding to human trafficking: prevention, protection and prosecution. The law has not been reauthorized since 2021.

The conversation underscored a greater need for strong prevention efforts, survivor-informed policy, and sustained support and protections for survivors.

Today’s youth are navigating an increasingly complex digital world.

Each year, Thorn surveys 1,000 young people between the ages of 9-17 about their attitudes and experiences related to online risks. The newly-released findings uncover important insight into how they are navigating online platforms, AI, disclosure, and sexual interactions.

These findings underscore the importance of ensuring young people are equipped with the tools, support, and trusted relationships they need to navigate difficult experiences online.

Today is International Youth Day!

At PACT, youth are essential partners in our mission to end sexual exploitation and trafficking.

This summer, we welcomed two groups of interns: one who supported PACT’s Youth Against Child Trafficking (Y-ACT) program and another from Vassar College, who contributed across PACT’s Education and Private Sector Engagement teams.

The interns brought fresh perspectives and energy to PACT’s work: providing feedback on our curricula, engaging with existing partners, identifying new opportunities for collaboration, supporting our presence at the FIFA Fan Zone, recording a podcast as their final project, and much more!

Their ideas, creativity, and commitment reflect the power of youth leadership in shaping solutions and driving meaningful change!

Today is Safe Sport Day!

This year’s campaign invites everyone to stand up, speak out, and play your part.

Protecting children is at the heart of PACT’s mission every day, with an even greater sense of urgency during large sporting events.

From coaches, referees, parents, and attendees of large sporting events, we can all play a role when it comes to child protection.

View PACT’s, “Child Trafficking Red Flag Checklist,” to learn what is child trafficking, the potential signs to look out for, and how to safely respond >> wearepact.org/protecting-children-sporting-events

Education and prevention go hand-in-hand in creating safer environments for every child.
