85 years ago today, on 29 September 1941, the massacre at Babyn Yar began.
Over the course of two days, N**i German forces and their auxiliaries murdered 33,771 Jews from Kyiv at the ravine. Many of those who remained in the city were women, children and older people. They had been ordered to gather with their documents, valuables and warm clothing, as though they were being sent elsewhere. Instead, they were led to their deaths.
Among them was Dina Pronicheva, a Jewish actress and mother. Dina survived by falling into the ravine and lying still among the bodies. She lived to describe what she had seen and, in 1946, testified at a war crimes trial in Kyiv. Her testimony is one of the voices through which we can confront the human reality of Babyn Yar.
Dina’s survival must also lead us to remember the women who could not tell their stories: mothers, daughters, sisters and grandmothers, each with a name, a family and a life beyond that September day.

At WHISC, we honour their memory by listening to women’s testimonies, preserving their stories and ensuring that the women of the Holocaust remain visible in our understanding of history.

On May 17, Remember the Women Institute will join Ghetto Fighters' House for a Zoom book launch of Matti Friedman's excellent new book Out of the Sky, about the parachutists from British Mandate pre-Israel. Watch for details. Meanwhile, read an interview with Friedman in Times of Israel.

Matti Friedman's new book, 'Out of the Sky,' breathes life into British intelligence operatives who became Zionist heroes despite -- or because of -- failing at their real mission
