Judy Y. Barrasso of Barrasso Usdin Kupperman Freeman & Sarver, LLC in New Orleans is the recipient of the 2026 Louisiana Bar Foundation’s Curtis R. Boisfontaine Trial Advocacy Award. The award was presented by LBF President Edmund Giering at the Louisiana State Bar Association General Assembly in Destin, Florida on June 4.

Ms. Barrasso received the award in recognition of her long-standing devotion to excellence in trial practice and for upholding the standards of ethics and consideration for the court, litigants, and all counsel. This award carries a cash stipend to any non-profit law-related program providing services in the state of Louisiana; Innocence & Justice Louisiana - formerly IPNO, was selected by Ms. Barrasso to receive the $1,000 stipend donated in her name.

The award was established through an endowment to the LBF in memory of Mr. Boisfontaine, who served as president of the LSBA and of the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel. Donations from Sessions, Fishman, Nathan & Israel, L.L.P., the Boisfontaine family, and friends established the fund.

The Lafayette Bar Foundation is here to help. If you are a survivor of domestic violence and need an attorney for your Title 46 Protective Order Hearing, call (337) 237-4700 or visit us at 2607 Johnston Street, Lafayette, LA, to apply and determine eligibility. Please note that you must have already been granted a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO).

If applying in person, bring your TRO petition and order, driver's license, and any relevant evidence, including police reports, photographs of injuries, medical records, or other supporting documentation.

It is important to understand that this service provides limited representation only. The volunteer attorney's representation ends after the Protective Order Hearing/Rule and does not extend to other legal matters or future proceedings.

For additional help and support, survivors of domestic violence can contact the Family Justice Center of Acadiana. Their multidisciplinary team is dedicated to providing an effective response to survivors of family violence.

The Lafayette Bar Foundation Protective Order Panel Program is funded through grants from the Louisiana Bar Foundation.

Are you an attorney interested in accepting protective order cases? Please call 337-237-4700 ext. 102 and ask for Marilyn, Director of Pro Bono Services.

From the very beginning, LBF’s work has been about more than funding programs. Our work is about building a system where fairness is possible—even for those who cannot afford legal help. Every day in Louisiana, thousands of people face civil legal problems they cannot solve alone and for many of them, hiring a lawyer simply isn’t possible. That’s where partnership makes all the difference.

This Mission Moment video highlights three of our partners who help bring that mission to life: The Pro Bono Project, the Louisiana State Bar Association, and Loyola University New Orleans College of Law.
