We join our community in remembering Frank Perez, a prominent New Orleans writer, historian, tour guide, and LGBTQ+ advocate, who died on August 8 at age 57. Perez co-founded the nonprofit, LGBT+ Archives Project of Louisiana , in 2014, a statewide collective aimed at preserving local gay and transgender history and a longtime grantee of the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s LGBTQ Fund.

Since its inaugural year in 2016, the Greater New Orleans Foundation’s LGBTQ Fund has awarded 160 grants totaling $952,000 to 57 nonprofits across our region, including the LGBTQ+ Archives Project. The grants support organizations that increase the quality of life and access to opportunity for LGBTQ individuals and families, particularly the most vulnerable members of the community, including elders, transgender youth and adults, people of color, low-income people, and persons who are disabled.

Perez will be remembered for the many ways he impacted and improved our region. He spent the last two decades documenting and sharing New Orleans LGBTQ+ history through his nonprofit, his work at Ambush Magazine, as a lecturer at Loyola University, and as the leader of a curated walking tour. He authored and co-authored several books. He worked with numerous local public officials to help highlight the city's LGBTQ+ history and served on several boards across the community.

May his activism and advocacy inspire us all to serve our communities.
