I was a kid, who had just been diagnosed with stage four cancer and had received numerous treatments of chemotherapy. As a result I was sick, depressed, and my hair fell out. I didn’t know if I would live or for how long.

During that tough time, I cried more than I smiled. My self-identity was in a whirlwind. I couldn’t attend school, play basketball, or just be a normal kid. I was bedridden with IVs in my arms and a catheter in my chest.

My life was just beginning but I found myself fighting for my next breath. I would mentally escape the pain by watching basketball games from my hospital bed. Just to see an extraordinarily gifted soaring through the air, captivated me and fans across the world.

The basketball was his paintbrush and the court his canvas. I felt I too could soar above my situation and create something beautiful out of an ugly battle with cancer.

While I was fighting to live through dying places, battling depression, and losing my hair due to chemotherapy…the late great Kobe Bryant signed a Caps For Kids hat for me with an encouraging message to keep fighting.

His words of wisdom and #8 autograph was more than a number to me. It was my new beginning. By God’s grace, I persevered and found the CAN in cancer.
