FINALLY...Gail's Law Goes into Effect July 1st. For all of you women that have been confused by the DENSE BREAST letter...

What to Know About Gail’s Law – 2025 WI Act 103

Gail’s Law will go into effect July 1, 2026, for plan years that begin January 1, 2027.

If you have received a letter following a mammogram that indicates you have dense breast tissue or a strong family history of breast cancer, have a discussion with your provider about supplemental screening with MRI or ultrasound.

Your provider must refer you for an MRI or ultrasound. You cannot schedule these tests on your own.

If you receive a call back after your annual screening mammogram for further tests that would be considered diagnostic tests, you should not have to pay out of pocket for those any longer.

Before scheduling any additional screening or diagnostic tests, follow up with your insurance plan to be sure they will comply with Gail’s Law and provide these tests cost free. They should not be applied towards your deductible and you should have no out of pocket costs.

Thank you to Leah Denny and her staff at the HIR Wellness Institute for a wonderful visit. Therapist Xavier Smart gave us a tour of the campus, a wonderful overview of the programs the philosophy and their community engagement. We look forward to having the HIR Wellness Institute present at our Warrior Strong program on April 18th at the Southeastern Oneida Tribal Service Office.

Aimed at cancer thrivers and caregivers, this event will provide knowledge, activities, resources and space to discuss the challenges faced while dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

The Wisconsin Well Woman Program from Wisconsin Department of Health Services helps women who have little or no health insurance get screening for breast and cervical cancers.

Wisconsin Well Woman Program
It pays for:

Clinical breast exams
Diagnostic testing if your screening test results are abnormal
Human papillomavirus (HPV) tests
Mammograms (breast cancer screening).
Multiple sclerosis testing for those who are high risk.
Pap tests (cervical cancer screening).
Pelvic exams
You don’t have to pay a:

Co-payment.
Deductible.
Premium.
You must use a medical provider in the program.
