Works 4 U, Inc.

Works 4 U, Inc. Our mission at Works 4 U, Inc. is to end homelessness through employment. We incorporated on July 1st, 2020 and have 501c3 status. Our idea is not new.

Initially with the help of the new Major of the New Bedford Salvation Army, Major Michael Jung, we began a work program. We we researched what other cities around the country were doing to help people who are suffering or previously suffered from homelessness. We all desire a sense of purpose and most of us spend our lives pursuing it. For many of us, our sense of purpose comes from our career or

job. The homeless are usually at a disadvantage in this pursuit because of how the odds are already stacked against them. At Works 4 U, we attempt to level the playing field by helping them to build up their self esteem, develop teamwork and leadership skills, as well as identify their individual strengths. Our process at Works 4 U involves four stages: Recruit-->Train-->Place-->Support See Less

Today our crew helped prep the beds for butternut squash at Sharing the Harvest Community Farm. Apparently, butternut squash is the vegetable most in demand at the farm. In addition to the weekly Saturday team we send out there, three of our crew help out on Thursdays after they finish working with the YMCA’s Full Plate project.

Close to 40 people experiencing homelessness came to work on this Super Second Saturday of the month. They cleaned up the grounds of the The Salvation Army of New Bedford as well as the downtown City of New Bedford shopping district. Special thanks to community mentors Tammie Frye as well as Debbie A. Fleet, Suzy and Melissa from the Center For Spiritual Living, MA for leading the teams. Also, thank you Debbie for donating the socks and sneakers. And thank you again to Jane Cabral and St. Mary’s Fairhaven, MA for the blessing bags. We gave out close to forty today.

We’re happy to announce that we now have three of our crew helping out one day a week at the Sharing the Harvest Community Farm and Dartmouth YMCA Full Plate Project. This is in addition to regular crew going there three Saturdays a month for the weekly work project.

Today we spilt our regular crew into two teams. One team went to Sharing the Harvest Community Farm in Dartmouth to help prep the onion beds. The other went to help Mobile Ministries New Bedford to load up the truck for its Saturday lunch run. We are very happy to be back at the farm and always happy to help out our friends at Mobile Ministries.

We have been waiting all winter for the opportunity to return to the Sharing the Harvest Community Farm. Today was the day! We met with Ashley Brister, farm director, and one of her longtime volunteers, Sarah, who guided us on cleaning out the children’s garden beds. The weather was surprisingly warm.

Today we were back helping out our friends over at Mobile Ministries New Bedford loading up and organizing their food & clothing distribution truck. We also had a team clean up litter around St. Paul's United Methodist Church and Buttonwood Park. Their truck goes out to various locations in the City of New Bedford six days a week to provide essentials to the homeless community. Next week, weather permitting, we should be back to working at Sharing the Harvest Community Farm.
