Our mission at Works 4 U, Inc. is to end homelessness through employment. We incorporated on July 1st, 2020 and have 501c3 status. Our idea is not new.

Initially with the help of the new Major of the New Bedford Salvation Army, Major Michael Jung, we began a work program. We we researched what other cities around the country were doing to help people who are suffering or previously suffered from homelessness. We all desire a sense of purpose and most of us spend our lives pursuing it. For many of us, our sense of purpose comes from our career or

job. The homeless are usually at a disadvantage in this pursuit because of how the odds are already stacked against them. At Works 4 U, we attempt to level the playing field by helping them to build up their self esteem, develop teamwork and leadership skills, as well as identify their individual strengths. We had over 32 people experiencing homelessness show up to work on Saturday despite the heat. They cleaned around the The Salvation Army of New Bedford as well as the downtown City of New Bedford Business District. A big thank you to two of our community mentors, Tammie Frye and Debbie A. Fleet, for leading a couple of the teams.

The last two weekends have been hot, but our crew persevered. One weekend they cleaned up the grounds around the The Salvation Army of New Bedford as well as downtown City of New Bedford shopping district. Last weekend our A-Team was back out at the Sharing the Harvest Community Farm weeding the sweet potato beds.

On this nice hot day, our crew harvested summer squash and scallions at Sharing the Harvest Community Farm. Farm Director Ashley Brister sent a couple of bins of delicious romaine lettuce back to Sister Rose’s shelter in City of New Bedford.

We were back at the Sharing the Harvest Community Farm today with the crew. We weeded the leek beds and Ethan sent us back with Strawberries and Snap Peas.

Exciting news for two of our crew. They have been helping a disabled gentleman maintain his yard. Works 4 U, Inc. introduced them a few months ago. The relationship has grown to a point where he has now invited them to affordably rent out a room in his house. So they will finally have a roof over their heads!

We had a crew of twenty show up today to clean up around the grounds of the The Salvation Army of New Bedford and the shopping district of downtown City of New Bedford.

We rolled out and staked tarps at Sharing the Harvest Community Farm today. Eva sent the crew back to Sister Rose's Shelter with bins of Bok Choy and Lettuce. We also set up a weekly lawn care project for two of our crew to help a disabled person in the City of New Bedford for the summer.

Today our crew helped prep the beds for butternut squash at Sharing the Harvest Community Farm. Apparently, butternut squash is the vegetable most in demand at the farm. In addition to the weekly Saturday team we send out there, three of our crew help out on Thursdays after they finish working with the YMCA’s Full Plate project.
