Groundwork has new tech! See here, real time data measured at Riverside Park, tracking temperature differences at the basketball court. These heat detecting devices are used to track ground temperatures and measure the data we collect to recognize inconsistencies. The space which we painted white measures lower than the darker spaces on the court; showing the asphalt absorbing the heat, making it harder to walk on, and heating up the area surrounding it. It also shows the trees lowering the temperature surrounding it as well.
This video was taken on May 20th, with the outdoor temperatures before in the high 80s, low 90s. These temperatures are measured in Celcius. The lowest measure here is 22°C, which is 71.6°F, with the highest detected on the FLIR camera being 45.5 °C, or 113°F. These new cameras can help show the benefits of urban farms, tree plantings, and shifts in infrastructure to support a healthier, cooler New Bedford.
