FLY Girl Institute

FLY Girl Institute Healing is our mission. 💖 The F.I.N.D. With an emphasis on girls that are high risk or have already interacted with the juvenile court system, T.F.D.

We believe Black and Brown girls are powerful and deserving of spaces that honor their full potential.

💖 Joy is our foundation. (Families in Need of Direction) Design is a 501(c)(3) community-based organization founded by Kara James and Sharese Chapman, both black women Michigan natives who were frustrated

and saddened by the lack of progress related to safe spaces for black girls and other girls of color in Middle Tennessee. As they saw it, this reality was representative of a bigger problem; the constant failure to understand and "see" black women and how racism, intergenerational trauma, and gender discrimination affect them. Additionally, programs that did exist and posed as empowering and impactful for "at-risk" black girls often stemmed from Eurocentric perspectives that did not consider their specific needs. This framework sent a message that their blackness needed "fixing" as the curriculum focused on European standards that lead to exclusion, which affected their sense of worth and purpose. As a result of their findings, Sharese and Kara saw a huge opportunity to cultivate safe spaces for black girls and girls of color to "be" while feeling valued, supported, and empowered. Design was formed to serve middle and high school black girls and other girls of color through culturally relevant African and African American-centric models that foster sensitivity and understanding to girls of color's unique needs. partners with public school systems and courts to offer services that promote the healing and safety needed to mitigate the effects of intergenerational trauma and unhealthy responses to such trauma leading to mentally, socially, and economically healthy citizens. Additionally, the organization focuses on undoing the school pushout and the abuse to prison pipeline that overwhelmingly affects black and brown girls by driving them out of their schools into the justice systems because of adultification and direct and indirect trauma. The program and its services reiterate the notion that when a girl has a safe space that doesn't penalize her for who she is, a stronger sense of self and identity, support from the community, and an environment of learning and expression, she's given them permission to be the "F.L.Y Girl" she was birthed to be; a champion for herself, her school, her communities, and especially for the girls that are coming behind her."

From learning a skill to building a future. 💜🧢

Our FLY Girls designed and heat-pressed their own custom hats while learning a hands-on skill that can grow into so much more.

What starts with creativity can become a brand, a business, a side hustle, or the beginning of an entrepreneurial journey.

At FLY Girl Institute, we want girls to know that their creativity has value, their ideas can create opportunity, and the skills they learn now can become tools they use for a lifetime.

We’re building confidence, ownership, and future entrepreneurs.

We are deeply grateful to the Robert K. and Anne H. Zelle Fund for Education at the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee for a generous $20,000 investment in our work supporting Black educators. 💜✨

Through our RestorED work, this support helps us create healing-centered spaces where Black educators can restore, reconnect, strengthen their well-being, and receive the care they so often give to everyone else.

When we invest in Black educators, we strengthen classrooms, schools, students, and entire communities.

Thank you for believing that those who pour into our children deserve spaces that pour back into them.

We are honored, grateful, and excited for what this investment will make possible. 🦋

Finally Friday with Felisha. 💜

Something shifted after Hi, Felisha.

What started as one event turned into something much bigger. The conversations didn't stop when everyone went home. If anything, they just got started.

So we're creating a space to keep them going.

Beginning August 14, Angela Means and our Executive Director Kara James will be going live together for real conversations about healing, identity, freedom, relationships, purpose... and all the things we don't talk about nearly enough.

No scripts.
No pretending.
No perfect answers.

Just two women showing up honestly and inviting others to do the same.

If you've ever felt labeled...
If you've ever had to reclaim your voice...
If you've ever wondered if anyone else understands your story...
Pull up a chair.
We'd love to have you in the conversation.

🗓️ LIVE: August 14, 2026

Research that Drives Change. Action that Creates Impact. 💜

We're proud to celebrate FLY Girl Institute's Executive Director, Kara James, as a co-author of Punished for Surviving, a newly published, peer-reviewed study in Youth (MDPI) that examines the experiences of Black girls in Tennessee schools.

This groundbreaking research reveals the disparities Black girls continue to face while also highlighting their resilience and introducing a healing-centered solution through the FIND Joy Incubator, developed by FLY Girl Institute.

This publication represents what is possible when research and community come together to create meaningful change. Congratulations to Kara James, lead researcher Dr. Andrea Joseph-McCatty, PhD, and the entire research team for advancing the conversation and advocating for a future where every Black girl is seen, supported, and empowered.

Together, we can turn research into action and transform systems that help Black girls heal, grow, and thrive.

Our girls had an exciting time exploring the world of podcasting! 🎙️💜

During their podcast session, they discovered how to use podcast equipment, speak confidently into the microphone, share their ideas, ask thoughtful questions, and engage in meaningful conversations.

More than just recording, the session gave them the opportunity to build confidence, strengthen their communication skills, and express themselves in a creative and authentic way.

Every voice has the power to inspire, and this experience reminded our girls that their stories matter and deserve to be heard.
