The District Nashville HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT NASHVILLE



The DISTRICT program began in the late 1980's as a collaboration between Historic Nashville Inc.

The District Nashville is a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and promoting downtown’s historic core—2nd Avenue, Broadway, and Printers Alley—through community events, revitalization efforts, and support for local culture and small businesses. and the Metropolitan Historical Commission. Patterned after the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s successful Main Street Program, the two organizat

ions sought to focus on the historic areas of Nashville, specifically 2nd Avenue, Broadway and Printer’s Alley. The Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency provided a three-year block grant of $30,000 per year as seed money to fund the startup of The DISTRICT organization. The Historic Riverfront Association 501(c)(3), established in the mid-1980's, sought to promote, preserve and protect the businesses, residents and buildings along 1st Avenue North and the Riverfront. When approached by Historic Nashville and the Metro Historic Commission to merge into The DISTRICT program, the Historic Riverfront Association 501(c)(3) welcomed the opportunity to expand its scope and continue its work. The Historic Riverfront Association already had a 501(c)(3) and the new organization, The DISTRICT, used The Historic Riverfront Association's non-profit designation. Geographically, The DISTRICT consists of three of downtown Nashville's National Register Historic Districts: 2nd Avenue, Broadway and Printer’s Alley. Organizationally, it is a partnership of the business community, property owners, preservationists, non-profits and government agencies with an interest in downtown Nashville.

🚨ROAD CLOSURE: Church Street at Anne Dallas Dudley Blvd between 6th Avenue N and 7th Avenue N will be closed beginning Monday, August 24 through Monday, September 7 for construction, weather dependent.

During construction the roadway will be closed Monday through Friday; however, the roadway will reopen on Saturday and Sunday.

Last week, the National Trust sent a letter to Chairmen and Ranking Members of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and House Committee on Natural Resources expressing our concerns about the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's (ACHP) proposed elimination of all meaningful Section 106 regulations.

“Section 106 has served the nation remarkably well because it is not merely a compliance exercise; it is a collaborative planning framework. It has enabled federal agencies, states, Tribes, local governments, project applicants, preservation organizations, and communities to work together to identify practical solutions that both advance infrastructure and development projects and protect the places that define our shared history. It has improved project outcomes by identifying concerns early, avoiding costly conflicts later in the permitting process, and fostering collaboration rather than litigation.”

We ask the Committees to weigh in during the comment period, given their longstanding jurisdiction over the National Historic Preservation Act, and respectfully urge the Committees to call on the ACHP to pursue targeted, consensus-based improvements that enhance efficiency while preserving the core principles that have made Section 106 one of our nation's most successful collaborative planning tools.

Let’s give it up for one of the newest kids on the block Jelly Roll's Goodnight Nashville

Opened in January 2025 at 209 Broadway, Jellyrolls Goodnight Nashville Bar is a multi-story honky-tonk. Jelly Roll is the first Nashville native to open a celebrity-branded bar on Lower Broadway.

We’ll sip, savor and stroll from The Stage on Broadway to Jellyrolls Goodnight Nashville, with curated bites, Jack Daniel's, Milagro Tequila provided by Lipman Brothers, plus live music and the presentation of the Spirit of the DISTRICT Award to Barrett Hobbs.

Barrett represents the third generation of his family to help shape Nashville’s country music tourism and bar scene. His grandfather, John A. Hobbs, famously co-founded the legendary Nashville Palace in 1977.
