Two years ago, firefighters in Paso Robles started using drones to prevent wildfires in the Salinas Riverbed, according to reports by KSBY 6 News.

The drones allowed the firefighters to have an aerial view of the hotspot for wildfires during the day and at night, possibly helping to detect the fires earlier.

In Montana, researchers have used drones to help forecast wildfires 🔥

The drones were part of a program to fight and forecast wildfires to help first responders as they respond, according to a Reuters article.

The drones carry instruments to measure temperature, humidity and wind speed and direction to send back to first responders thus helping them to evacuate people in the path of danger.

Did you know underwater drones, or ROVs, can be used by scientists to inspect and analyze sea ice thickness?

Deep Trekker published an article that said recent advancements of remotely operated vehicles have aided in research of sea ice, which is frozen seawater the floats on the ocean surface, in the severe environments of the Arctic.

Sea ice is a part of the cryosphere, or all the snow and ice covered regions of the world. It influences life on the planet and is a good indicator for climate change.

By studying the thickness of sea ice using drones can help scientists look into the disruption of ocean currents from the melting ice, which can affect the global climate. Sea ice thickness also affects the habitats of mammals like that of polar bears and walruses, and with the rapid decline of sea ice, some of these species are closer to extinction.

Now more than ever, drones are helping to prepare before and then help during and after hurricanes strike in the U.S.

According to WTSP-TV, drones were used before Hurricane Ian made landfall in Lee County in September 2022 to map out certain areas, including mapping out buildings and streets. This helped after surge waters flooded many areas, making streets and landmarks unrecognizable.

After Hurricane Ian hit Florida, at least 50 Skydio drones were used to relay critical information to first responders.
