Who are the most vulnerable populations for human trafficking?

- Native Americans

Human traffickers prey on vulnerabilities by deceptively offering safety, provision, opportunity and support to lure individuals who are in vulnerable circumstances.

Know the market, then build capacity. Many NGOs and non-profits have it backwards (we've been there before). In Northern Uganda, your support of Viable helps local community leaders guide and support vulnerable youth to explore opportunity beyond agriculture. Youth are interested in tailoring, hairdressing and plumbing.

"Learn a trade" assumes the needs (opportunity) is plentiful for that skill set. You are helping local community leaders in Northern Uganda guide their younger, more vulnerable community members in legitimate pathways to opportunity. This is very different than the traditional or status quo approach used by "NGOs" and well-intentioned nonprofits.

- TN survivors of abuse are 9 percentage points more likely to be arrested as an adult (4% points higher for violent crime);

- 11,668 first-time, substantiated victims generate 1,050 future felony convictions; and

- Future incarceration costs are approx. $91,000,000 per year (present value of $140,000,000 total costs per year)

(Nat'l avg. 2.7 years time served x ~40% TN recidivism rate x $96.68 per-inmate-day-cost)

That's $86,000 per person - every year - just in incarceration costs for survivors of abuse.
Add to that their lost wages amount to approx. $175,000.

Viable has innovative ideas to help youth survivors of abuse identify and pursue alternative pathways to healthy, productive lives.

She was the recipient of two job offers which represent meaningful career opportunities for her. What could be better than this, you ask? This - she can present the job offers to the judge to support her case to regain custody of her children from her abuser.

The work you support is about more than employment. It has a significant impact on mothers and their relationship with their children. A cascading effect for families (and family trees).

Your support has helped a survivor see possibilities she has never known to exist or to be within her reach. Your generosity has helped her identify her career interests and now work through training material for a certification process (paid for by her new employer).

She has surpassed her own expectations and she is gearing up for the final licensure exam. For the first time in a long time she is optimistic, encouraged, and ready to take on new challenges.

You make personal and professional growth possible for "overcomers" like her. Viable challenges her while supporting her. She is guided in her journey which is based on her interests. She has "Mo" on her side (momentum) and she is excited about what the future holds. Not long ago, she was thankful for the safety and healing provided to her by Viable's referring agency partner, but she was concerned about what was next for her when the residential program ends. Now she knows and she is going for it!

Jane had a way out, but she didn't know what to expect in a new life. The dark path was all she had known. Despite her fear, her desire for a better future was greater.

Jane's story highlights a critical issue: perpetrators promise "a bright future" to people in vulnerable circumstances.

When you support Viable, you support collaboration with partner agencies that build on the progress made by the agencies and the survivors they serve. Agency leaders and staff often feel like they are just "sending people out to drown" after years of support.

A client's time at a residential program was the first of many steps to healing. Ultimately, they must develop a way to support themselves after they leave the program. This in-between phase, known as "transition," is filled with challenges. Although they may no longer be in active abuse or exploitation, they are still vulnerable.
