At Path2Freedom, we believe healing happens in many different ways. Opportunities to explore creativity, try something new, and discover personal interests can help survivors build confidence, recognize their strengths, and see new possibilities for their future.

Sometimes, the signs are hiding in plain sight. A Collier County physician once shared the story of a 13 year old girl who was being sexually trafficked by someone she knew and exploited after school. She had been brought to the emergency room multiple times before the signs of trafficking were recognized.

As children head back to school, it’s important for parents, teachers, coaches, counselors, and other trusted adults to pay attention to changes that may signal something deeper:

📚 Sudden changes in school performance or attendance
💭 Changes in behavior, mood, or relationships
🎁 Unexplained gifts, money, or new possessions
📱 Secretive online activity or new relationships
🏠 Changes in where a child spends time or who they are spending it with
💛 Becoming withdrawn, fearful, or unusually protective of someone

One change doesn’t necessarily mean trafficking is occurring. But a pattern of changes is worth noticing and a conversation is worth having.

Sometimes, simply asking a child, “Are you okay?” and creating a safe space for them to answer can make all the difference.

Her story is an important reminder that trafficking does not always look the way we imagine it. It can happen in familiar places and involve people a child knows and trusts. It can happen at home, after school, online, or within a child’s existing relationships.

This back to school season, let’s remember that keeping children safe starts with paying attention, listening without judgment, and knowing the signs.

Every child deserves to feel safe at school, at home, and everywhere in between.

Today, we’re celebrating an incredible milestone as Kaylynn not only graduated from high school through Path2Freedom’s Magnolia School Program ✏️📚she’s is getting ready to experience an exciting new chapter after being accepted to college!

Her journey is a powerful reminder of what can happen when resilience is met with opportunity, encouragement, and a community that believes in a brighter future.

We are honored to receive a $40,000 grant from The Women’s Foundation of Collier County to strengthen safety at Path2Freedom’s Magnolia Safe House.🏡

This investment will fund enhanced security measures, including upgraded surveillance, lighting, privacy fencing, and perimeter protection, creating an even safer environment where child survivors of human trafficking can begin their healing journey.🚨🔒

Florida remains one of the nation’s hotspots for human trafficking. According to the Florida Department of Children and Families, 596 children were identified as victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children during 2024–2025. Yet, only 34 licensed long-term safe beds currently exist statewide for child trafficking survivors. Path2Freedom is proud to provide 10 of those beds through our Magnolia Safe Houses in Lee and Collier Counties.
