FORCE BLUE

FORCE BLUE More alarmingly, 22 veterans a day commit suicide-more than three times the U.S. national average. Visit www.forceblueteam.org to learn more. # # # #

FORCE BLUE is 501c3 nonprofit organization uniting the community of Special Operations veterans with the world of marine science and conservation for the betterment of both. FORCE BLUE is the only non-profit 501(c)(3) in the world specifically created to unite the community of Special Operations Veterans with the world of coral reef conservation for the betterment of both. More than 40 percent of

the 3million men and women combat veterans of the Iraq & Afghanistan wars are likely to experience some form of post traumatic stress (PTS,) due in part to difficulty adjusting to an unstructured life after military order and/or trouble relating their military skills to civilian work. FORCE BLUE gives former military trained combat divers and veterans of Special Operations Forces an important new mission: to experience and explore one of the most critically endangered ecosystems on the planet–and to adapt their training and teamwork to rebuild the fragile ecosystem and aid in its protection. FORCE BLUE teaches veterans: their skills and training are transferable and can still make a positive difference, camaraderie does exist after combat and helping can be the antidote to harming. FORCE BLUE welcomes the support of people and organizations who see the value in this unique mission and want to play a part in its success.

A BIG PART OF FORCE BLUE’S ALLURE is the opportunity it affords our veterans to go where very few have gone and to do what even fewer are doing.

Never was that more evident than during our Tour of Duty stop at Papahānaumokuākea National Marine Sanctuary last Spring.

OUR ADOPTED HOME of Charleston, SC and our friends at the South Carolina Aquarium welcomed our team last month for a few days of artificial reef work and a quick dip in the "Great Ocean Tank" where we had the pleasure of interacting with Aquarium occupants and visitors alike. Special thanks to our partners at The Boeing Company for making it all possible — and to our friends at Vineyard Vines for hosting us in their King St store.

With a grant by Boeing, FORCE BLUE veterans recently joined scientists from the South Carolina Aquarium to construct a half-dozen artificial “reef cones”.

BLUE RAH, NATHAN! What began last summer as a fanciful “what if?” ended this month in an amazing show of grit and determination as FORCE BLUE’s Nathan Quinn crossed the finish line at the famed Marathon de Sables in Morocco — the final road race of the “1,000K for Dr. J” campaign he began back in October.

With the goal of raising awareness for FORCE BLUE and honoring the legacy of our late teammate Wallace J. Nichols, Nathan logged over 1,000 kilometers in 11 long distance running events across four continents.

True to the tradition J began, Nathan also handed out over 1,000 blue marbles to individuals he encountered along the way — inspiring them to begin or to expand their own relationship with water.

“In six months I ran 730 waterside kilometers to spread the word about FORCE BLUE and the Blue Mind movement created by my friend Dr Wallace J Nichols,” said Nathan.

“To close out the project I flew to the Sahara desert to attempt 'the most difficult footrace in the world. The MDS is the “Sand Marathon”- 6.5 Marathons in 6.5 days with all my food and camping gear on my back. Additionally, they asked me to carry a radio and med pack to serve as one of 12 running medics on my 170 mile journey. Stage 4 was 62 miles of sand dunes and jagged rocks and gave me more than enough time to listen to the audiobook of BLUE MIND one more time. The desert has a way of reminding you how wonderful it can be to stare out at an endless ocean, or across a beautiful lake.

1000k is a long way to go, but we're just getting started. The Blue Mind movement has many more miles in it and FORCE BLUE has dozens of upcoming projects, I look forward to helping both whenever I can. Thanks to all that ran with me, donated, or helped to spread the word- I am grateful for your help and I wish you water.”
